Kindergarten Girl Performs Holiday Concert in Sign Language for her Deaf Parents. {Video}

I recently attended my toddler’s school holiday program, so I can officially vouch for how darling these productions are in real life.

However, nothing quite prepared me for this video.

In it, five-year-old Claire Koch is captured using ASL to sign “Santa is his Name-O”—sung to the tune of “Bingo was his name-o”—so that her parents could understand the lyrics.

Claire’s mother Lori Koch told Yahoo News, via email, that she wasn’t expecting her daughter to sign during the concert. “The regular kids used generic hand motions while my daughter chose to use sign language, to our surprise,” she said.

Koch said that she can read lips and speak and sign, while her husband, who is also deaf, uses only sign language. “ASL is the first language in our home, so our daughter has been exposed to it since birth,” she said.

Koch also complimented her daughter’s signing abilities, joking that she “is a much better interpreter than Nelson’s fake one.”

And thankfully for us, Claire’s proud mom recorded it all.
