Chai tea is a traditional, centuries-old beverage from India.
Chai is made of a delicious blend of tea and spices. We drink it every morning.
Drinking chai increases peace of mind and promotes health. It is said to improve digestion, strengthen the immune system, decrease inflammation, act as an antioxidant and have anti-cancer properties.
Making chai at home is enjoyable and makes the house smell heavenly—a terrific way to start the day!
Cooking homemade chai is simple and gratifying. Fresh chai is nutritious and energizing.
Here is the recipe I follow:
In a saucepan, boil 5 cups of water.
Add ¼ cup grated fresh ginger.
Grind the following with a rolling pin, coffee grinder or blender:
- ½ stick cinnamon
- 1 T. cardamom pods
- 8 peppercorns
- 1/8 t. nutmeg
Add ground ingredients to water, boil 20 to 30 minutes and strain. Steep with 2 black tea bags (rooibos is a nice caffeine- free alternative). Then add:
- 1 c. steamed milk or milk alternative
- 2 T. sugar (more or less to taste)
Enjoy the flavorful aroma and warming flavor!
