Michael loves sharing what he's learned about organic lifestyles like living off the grid and bicycle commuting. He calls it "lifestyle entrepreneurship". He's into organic gardening, mindful living, and realizes that we only have this life and each other. His favorite quote is "The master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his information and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence at whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he's always doing both." (James A. Michener)

Mindful Eating.

by on Feb 8, 2012

What is mindful eating? You might think of mindful eating as meditating while eating. The meditation takes the form of focusing on the food you're eating and not so much the conversation and distractions that surround it.

Living Off-The-Grid

by on Oct 6, 2011

Living off-the-grid means living without public utilities like electricity. People who live off-the grid may not depend on municipal water, sewage, or natural gas. It also can mean you're self-sufficient in various ways. There are many third-world citizens who have lived off-the grid for generations. Some people choose this alternative lifestyle to save money. It's also a way to lower your environmental footprint. Michael "Mycol" Stevens lives off-the-grid just north of Gainesville, Florida. I met Mycol at a Fall planting workshop called "Fall Harvest Fest" hosted by our local green store, Indigo. He gave a talk about his experiences with self sustenance, organic living and his alternative lifestyle in general. He invited me to his place after the talk.

Fat, Dumb and Happy…

Vermont and other States of Mind

by on Jun 18, 2011

Do you think people wake up in the morning and roll over and say "Hey, looks like a sweet way to make a living. I think I'll grab a cardboard and a Magic Marker and do some begging on a busy street corner today?" Hell no. It's desperation. It sucks. There are swarms of mosquitos here and it's cold in Portland, the cops beat the shit out of these homeless...

Yasso on Running, Community and Inclusion

Wherever You Go There You Are

by on Jun 5, 2011

Meditation can be as simple as you like. Basically, we know meditation is all about clearing our mind for a time. It's hard to not think about anything. So, we search for some guidance. Zinn's book "Wherever You Go There You Are" satisfies me as a well-written, knowledgable guide to understanding and practicing by a degreed MD practitioner who happens to be a clear thinker and writer, too.

A Great Day at the Garden!

by on Mar 13, 2011

It's rather funny that we chuckle at traditional knowledge. Remember the TV show "Green Acres"? I'll tell you what: when you're faced with an aggressive rooster and that task of putting him back in his coop is daunting, traditional "simple living" might not seem so easy.

The Mindful Garden.

by on Sep 23, 2010

"If anything is the Right Action today, coming out to the garden with you surely is!" Alex liked the tone of those words. "Let's take a look around and see how the plants are coming along."

A Rooster Named Dog

by on Jun 2, 2010

It's become popular to raise chickens in urban settings these days. Why? Fresh eggs and poultry go a long way in this economy. Raising your own food brings you closer to the earth. By tending to your own chickens you're assured of their health.

Sharability dot org Community Promotes Sharing Rather Than Buying

by on Oct 13, 2009

UF Phd candidate Alex Goldman founded www.sharability.org thinking that sharing makes more sense than buying. Say for example you need to dig a posthole. Once. Hopefully, never again! Does it make sense to run to the hardware store and buy your own posthole digger? Why not borrow one for an hour from a neighbor.
