Profile
Growing up in the Colorado countryside, Rachel Znerold knew early on that she was different…she saw dazzling beauty in decomposing logs and expressed her individuality with wild drawings on her sneakers. Now, as a prolific painter, eco-fashion designer, performance artist and writer, Rachel makes a life out of making art. With a degree in Fine Art and Advertising from The University of Colorado in Boulder, Rachel began to pursue her art career full time. Aiming to share her awe of the world and the art of the everyday, she has taught painting, fashion design, and performance at a variety of schools, museums, and non-profits. Rachel has been commissioned to paint murals in Colorado, New Zealand and Mexico, and eventually landed in San Francisco, becoming a part of the Mission District’s vibrant art scene. Rachel believes art is instrumental in building strong community and a culture of social activism. www.rachelzart.com

Yum! Compost Good Enough to Eat!

by on May 26, 2011

Beauty and inspiration often reveal themselves in the most unexpected places. Today, my kitchen compost bucket was stunning, bursting with luscious colors, and it simply stopped me in my tracks. Its contents were from a special housewarming dinner at my month-long artist residency at Eldorado Springs Art Center. I cooked a super-yummy quinoa-kale mélange, prepared [...]

Not an Artist? Bet you ARE. [Try The Intuitive Painting Workshop at Eldorado Springs Art Center]

by on May 24, 2011

About half the time I tell people I’m an artist for a living, they say, “Boy, I wish I were an artist. I don’t have a creative bone in my body.” Well, that just breaks my heart. OF COURSE you are an artist! Each and every one of us has a unique and beautiful energy, [...]

SF to Boulder: Artist On the Road [Photo Journal]

by on May 18, 2011

People talk of ‘heading west’ to freedom, wilderness and adventure. From explorers to Phish-heads, swarms of people throughout history have set out for the left coast in search of fame, glory, and a good ole-fashioned party. But this time, I’m driving east to freedom, wilderness and adventure. But rather than seeking fame and glory, my [...]

Cinco de Mayo Potluck? Make these Papas Verdes!

by on May 5, 2011

Inside a tiny corner market in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, I gazed up-and-down the store’s two colorful aisles, knowing the odds were slim (okay, nil) that I’d spot soymilk or Earth Balance–still, I felt compelled to look. My fiancée, Scott, and I were excited to prepare dinner in the kitchen of our luxurious, hillside villa [...]

Life as Art, Art as Life: Meeting Linda Montano [+ My Video Art Response]

by on Feb 21, 2011

Linda Montano is legendary….an Art Saint, really. I first knew her as the performance artist who, for an entire year, was tied by a rope to another person. Wow…now that’s dedication. Linda has been a famed feminist performance artist since the 1960’s, her fascinating work exploring the crossover between life and art through beautiful life-altering [...]

Eco-Friendly & Independent Creations: Holiday Gifts that Feel Good to Give.

by on Dec 10, 2010

The consumer buzz around the Holidays always leaves me feeling half-titillated, half-nauseated. I want to give my friends and family something special to show them how blessed I feel to have them in my life, but I can’t quite bear the thought of contributing to mass-produced junk companies, and I definitely can’t get within 100 [...]

One big, happy, family. We live here: SF.

by on Nov 15, 2010

Julie Michelle has changed my life. I remember the day I first stumbled upon i live here: SF, her beautiful photography art project/blog/collaboration documenting San Francisco residents and allowing each to tell their “San Francisco” story. At the time, I was stalking the twitter feeds of cool SF art organizations, trying to manifest more collaboration [...]

Election Day Fashion Flash Mob: “Voting Turns Me On!”

by on Nov 4, 2010

It’s 6:30 am on Election Day and ten girls are bustling around my art studio, trying on hand-made outfits, applying lipstick and teasing their hair. “How about, ‘Voting Turns Me On!’?” Angela asks, sharpie marker in one hand, blank protest sign in the other. The red vinyl carpet is rolled out on the paint-splattered cement [...]

New Music I’m Totally Geeking Out Over This Month.

by on Oct 1, 2010

1.  Deerhunter, Halcyon Digest: Oh man, I love everything Bradford does. “Boundless Possibilities” is right on. More pop-driven and Beatles-influenced than ever. 2.  Arcade Fire, The Suburbs: Compelling songwriting, rich compositions, and killer licks. It’s a winner. Anyone who names a song Rococo is awesome. 3.  Best Coast, Crazy For You: Syrupy and delicious, sweet-as-pie [...]

Confessions of an Eco-Shopper: Garage Sale Tables.

by on Jul 14, 2010

I love me a good garage sale. I just can’t pass ‘em up. What treasures may be awaiting me in the motley sidewalk clusters?? Last Sunday, while walking to get a Fayes iced coffee (the best), I bumped into my friend Mary who was having a garage sale. Not only did I score a glass [...]

Carnaval Heats Up La Mission [Photo Slideshow!]

by on Jun 8, 2010

¡HOT HOT HOT! Diving into Summer with a Splash of Culture: San Francisco’s Mission The pulsing beats bounce off buildings, finding their way around corners and into my ears while I am still five blocks away from the Carnaval parade route. As I approach Mission Street, my stroll becomes a salsa—the festive energy is contagious—and [...]

It Takes a Village to Save an Elephant.

by on May 19, 2010

We can start a Community Revolution! My community is bigger than Boulder, bigger than San Francisco, bigger than America. Every day, my worldwide community is expanding—and I am enthralled. As an artist, a lover of life, a conscious consumer, I am sustained by this beautiful free flow of ideas, energy and storytelling. Derived from the [...]

The Future Of Eco-Fashion: Crystal Ball Predictions!

by on Apr 22, 2010

The fashion world loves recycling. From classic 40’s pencil skirts to flouncy neon 80’s dresses, style always seems to come full circle. Recently, more and more fashion designers are using recycled materials and futuristic fabrics made from plastic bottles, soy byproducts, and even chicken feathers. In celebration of Earth Day, I  took an in-depth look [...]

More Green Art: My Earth Day Resolution.

by on Apr 21, 2010

It’s almost Earth Day, and everyone’s talking about their “Earth Day Resolutions,” or what changes they plan to make to help out our favorite planet.  This year, I want to continue to seek out new ways to make my business—and my art practice—more eco-friendly. I am going to commit to taking the extra step to [...]

Get Naked To “Prove You’re Not A Robot”

by on Apr 8, 2010

Performance art is shocking. Naked. Terrifying. Beautiful. Grotesque.  Above all else, performance art forces us to think. I love it. Opening tonight, two of my favorite San Francisco performance artists, Sadie Lune and Lula Mae Day, present “Prove You’re Not a Robot: Interactive Experiments in Fear-Art-Love,” a roving performance art installation piece at The Garage [...]

How to Save Our Schools (with a Paintbrush + a Party)

by on Mar 30, 2010

I often wonder if I would have become an artist without the amazing support and instruction of my public school art teachers. For many students, the arts programs are what keep them in school, or at least what keep them engaged. Yet, in public schools all over California (and all over the country as well), [...]

Teen Fights To Bring Her Girlfriend To Prom: School District Cancels Prom!

by on Mar 15, 2010

For many of America’s youth, Prom is one of the biggest nights of their young life…dressing elegantly, riding in limos, and dancing closely with your sweetheart. So why is one high school in Mississippi forbidding a student to attend her prom and take part in her teenage history? Simply because she wanted to wear a [...]

Upcycled Designs Heat Up The Runway! (Pics) This spring season, fashion is all about rich colors and textures, feminine laces, floral prints, drapey mini-dresses with lots of movement, and of course, saving the environment.  “Eco Fashion” is a hot topic these days, with more designers than ever sourcing their materials from organic and sustainable producers. Atomic Love (Which Love Explosion are You?)

by on Feb 10, 2010

Love is nebulous. Love is a vapor, a puff of smoke, a fiery explosion. And like an explosion, every love begins with a spark. Maybe it’s an atomic explosion or maybe just a single firecracker. Maybe it’s a slow burning ember, or a dark cloud of smoke. Love is such an indescribable experience, unique to [...]

Green and Glam Wedding Gown [Part 2 w/Pics!]

by on Feb 5, 2010

Every bride wants to look glamorous and beautiful on her wedding day…but can you also be 100% organic and eco-conscious? Last spring I met Kristen, a Northern California gal who challenges herself to live entirely on organic and locally-made goods. She grows her own vegetables and cans her own divine jams (which I have been [...]

Top Ten Albums of 2009: Music to Make Art To!

by on Feb 3, 2010

Listening to music while creating art is like escaping into a dream and emerging with a souvenir. Music and art-making are undeniably intertwined, passionate partners who enrich, even define one another.  Last year was an amazing year of music. It was so tricky to whittle down my favorites!  But here it is: my humble list [...]

The Accessible Luxury of Fruits + Vegetables: the Urban Food Revolution.

by on Jan 21, 2010

Like a good eco-citizen, I’ve been staying up on the Whole Foods Boycott debate, and can’t help but think how lucky (or privileged) we are to be able to have this discussion.  No one talks about the idea that having a grocery store at all is a “luxury,” because, well, it shouldn’t be. Yet in [...]

Why You Can’t Trust Homeopathy…or Can You?

by on Jan 20, 2010

Ok, I admit, sometimes I’m skeptical of these high-dollar, over-the-counter homeopathic remedies…fourteen dollars for a tiny vial of hope?!?  It reminds me of the old days, when they would sell mysterious tinctures that cured insomnia, ear aches, rashes and constipation, and a hundred years later, we discover that it was actually liquid cocaine. Nice.  Perfect [...]

Amazing Animation of 1969 Lennon Interview [Great Video on Peace!]

by on Jan 6, 2010

Imagine being 14 years old in 1969, and sneaking into John Lennon’s hotel room in Toronto with your reel-to-reel tape recorder and asking him to do an interview with you….That is exactly what Beatles lover Jerry Levitan did. Now, 40 years later,

Little Altars Everywhere: El Dia De Los Muertos Celebration in San Francisco [Photo Gallery!]

by on Nov 4, 2009

Growing up, celebrating El Dia De Los Muertos meant cutting out tissue paper skulls and eating skeleton-shaped bread in Spanish class, and ultimately, it meant extending Halloween for a few extra days. I loved the idea of lively dancing skeletons and spirits coming to visit, but I never really understood their true significance until I [...]

“Thousand Wishes” Artwork Explores Nature’s Perfection and its Tango with Humanity. [Photo Slideshow: Jellyfish, Paintings, Edo Salon, San Francisco]

by on Mar 9, 2009

The delicate dance between nature and humanity has fascinated artists since man began scrawling on cave walls, where even the act of creating artwork defaced the raw beauty of the stone. As society grows, this interaction is unavoidable,
