Conscious Consumerism (& Business)

Zero Waste Bathroom. ~Bea Johnson

by on Feb 11, 2012

The fastest way to get to Zero Waste here, is to find alternatives to your disposables: Remove your bathroom trash can...whatever lands on the floor is what calls for an ersatz. Here are the changes we've made.

Remember your New Years’ Resolutions? No? Here are the Buddha’s all 12 (apocryphal) ways to fix that.

by on Feb 10, 2012

My guess is if the Buddha did New Years’ Resolutions, the Four Noble Truths would’ve looked like this: 1. In life there is time-wasting 2. The origin of time-wasting is unconsciousness 3. To stop being unconscious you must know what you want and what you don’t want (duh!) 4. To know what you want and what you don’t want, walk the noble twelvefold path....

Do you struggle with the ethics of making a profit?

by on Feb 10, 2012

When we don't charge enough for our services or products and run our businesses on minimal resources, the impression we make on others is not that we offer help but that we need help. Most of us don't really want anything that is not freely and enthusiastically given. Design your business practices so that you deliver your work with authentic generosity so that both you and your clients and customers can thrive.

Farewell Patagonia.

by on Feb 9, 2012

We woke up Saturday morning to perhaps one of the most perfect days in Patagonia. The birds were singing in full glory to welcome the rising sun above the serene Patagonian landscape. The sky was as blue as the sea and clear except for a few lazy powder puff clouds lingering off in the distance.

Being A Writer Is Easy.

by on Feb 6, 2012

Being a writer is much like giving birth. A seed is planted. You're excited, you make preparations, you nourish the seed carefully, anxiously awaiting for it to mature. Finally, the time has come to introduce your creation to the world. It's scary. And messy. It's hard pushing your love out into the big scary world. There's even some screaming and some bloodshed.

Government Regulated Yoga? ~ Ira Israel

by on Feb 6, 2012

The studio will close and the state government will step in to regulate all aspects of Teacher Training the same way they regulate all aspects of becoming a licensed psychotherapist....The problem for me is that 90% of what's being called yoga in America has little to do with the original purpose of yoga, uniting with the divine.

Organic farmers challenge Monsanto in community lawsuit.

by on Feb 3, 2012

For the past 12,000 years farmers have saved the best seeds each year to increase yields and improve traits for the food we eat," said Dave Murphy, founder and Executive Director of Food Democracy Now! "In 1996, when Monsanto sold its first patented genetically modified (GMO) seed to farmers, this radically changed the idea of how farmers planted and saved seed."

Put That Down! We Can’t Afford It.

by on Feb 3, 2012

I have been complicit by ignorance. Things often have a cost we didn’t suspect. We cannot be aware of everything. This is the cost of living. To be aware of every transgression and to make it a business to fight every transgression is a full time and sorrowful job.

My Experiences as a Social Entrepreneur in Developing Countries. ~ Tiez Kroezen

by on Feb 3, 2012

People often ask me what made me decide to give up my consulting-career and live the uncertain life of a social entrepreneur. My answer is that it is because I am a stubborn fool. Foolish enough to try things that many people say are impossible: building a business with thousands of illiterate, unorganized farmers in Ghana, or trying to make money with Internet in Africa, which most experts say is impossible. And I am stubborn enough to continue trying, even when things are tough.

Consciousness and the Flavor of Authentic Marketing.

by on Feb 3, 2012

Consciousness is transformative. It can transform simple food into deeply nourishing meals. When it comes to marketing and selling your work, consciousness means using simple methods, the purest available messages, and a keen awareness of what it takes to create enduring relationships with just-right clients.

Be Careful of ‘Green’ Cleaning Products. ~ Dr. Joseph Mercola

by on Feb 3, 2012

The truth is, most cleaning products on the market are toxic chemical cocktails, and when you spritz your bathtub or kitchen counter with that brightly colored liquid you're exposing yourself and your family to endocrine-disrupting phthalates, carcinogenic benzene, and organ-damaging phenols, just to name a few.

Zero Waste Kitchen. ~ Bea Johnson

by on Feb 1, 2012

Friends have asked me to blog about what they can do to reduce their household waste. I think its time that I wrote about what we did and are doing in our house. Let's start with the kitchen.

“Wellness that Worx” – American Alternative Health Care Ingenuity.

by on Jan 30, 2012

It dawned on Ms. Nelson, who also has worked as a marketing and communications consultant for businesses, that there was something she could do to help meet this need. Her vision was to create a win-win solution whereby clients in need can obtain alternative health care treatments at a reduced cost and whereby practitioners can grow their businesses by dramatically increasing their clientele. Hence, the “Wellness Networx.” Wellness Networx is a network of alternative health care providers in and around the Boulder area that offers services at affordable discounted rates for members.

I Know How God Feels.

by on Jan 27, 2012

I find the rhino more noble than Jerry. There is a perfection in the beast, which the killer hiding behind his gun (and the backup guns all around him) lacks. I believe paying hunters are cowards and thieves. They hide under the strong arms of the professional hunter. They are stealing a false sense of virility, which they wear like the cheapest cologne on the planet. They don the fool's grin, but not in a good way.

Videogameasana – 10 Secrets to Make Learning Fun for Our Kids!

by on Jan 26, 2012

When we practice yoga, we acknowledge the growth and change that comes from our commitment to breath, body and soul - this growth comes from consistently practicing over an extended period of time. More kids have learned the value of practice from playing Syper Mario Brothers than we care to acknowledge, but it isn't easy to beat level one without practicing (when you will have to jump on mushrooms in life I am not sure).

Hot or Not?

by on Jan 25, 2012

I'm choosing to abandon my "recovery" ideal of living on the edge of health. If that is where I end up fine, but if it isn't what happens then so be it. I have more to live for than subcutaneous fat. Of course an eating disorder isn't really about the subcutaneous fat, but putting it in such blunt terms sure sounds ridiculous, right?

Baby Showers, Registries, Necessities? Integrating Yoga & Lamaze Part 5 – Aparigraha.

by on Jan 24, 2012

On an emotional level, Aparigraha can refer to clinging to an idea of what we must have for our births. Sometimes we cling so tightly to that idea; we forget what is truly important and necessary. The “ideal” birth is one of the ways we cling to that which isn’t necessary. This can cause heartache and disappointment if the “ideal” goal isn’t met – even if there are true and valid medical reasons why that goal wasn’t met.

An Interview with Lynn Hasselberger.

by on Jan 24, 2012

Elephant Journal readers have become accustomed the wisdom of Lynn Hassleberger. And no wonder. Lynn is a contemporary - armed with technology, compassion and enthusiasm - she approaches environmental responsibility with a business-precise efficiency. She's the founder of myEARTH360.com, an eco-commerce company bound with a reminder that our buying patterns are meaningful on a planetary scale.

Three keys to setting mindful goals.

by on Jan 20, 2012

How big should a goal be? What does it mean to set goals mindfully? There's no telling how big your right-sized goal will be until you pay attention to aspiration, receivability, and gratitude. It could be much smaller or larger than you first anticipated. What is certain is that it will be squarely in the middle of what is possible for you at this place and time.

What Type of Foodie are You?

by on Jan 19, 2012

Eating is a social experience, it is a way that we connect with our families and friends. Whether we are meeting new people, dating or catching up with old friends – sharing a bottle of wine and a meal is a great way to spend our time together.
