Nick Cave is the Aussie doppelganger to Tom Waits; a deranged lounge singer in Mad Max’s favorite pub.Narrative a la Leonard Cohen is set to garage goth groove laid down by the multi-instrumentalist Bad Seeds—their 14th recording with Cave. In addition to the Seed’s swirling waves of organ, pulsing bass and distorted Fender mandocaster (electric mandolin), everything is peppered with a trembling percussion of tambourines, shakers and sleigh bells. Dig’s closing track, “No News from Nowhere”—a seven verse, eight-minute Dylan-esque epic—exhibits the depth of Cave’s poetic and literary skills.
