Paddle Board Yoga! Video via Dashama.

If you love trying new things and are seeking a way to add diversity to your fitness or yoga practice, I strongly encourage you to try Paddleboard Yoga. This is a style/technique I developed in the Atlantic Ocean in 2008. The benefits are vast, and it is catching on quickly.

What is Paddleboard Yoga?

Paddle Boarding (sometimes referred to as SUP- Stand Up Paddle Boarding) is a fitness activity you can try in the ocean, a lake or any body of water. The main components are an ‘oar’ like paddle you use to navigate, move and steer, while standing on a ‘paddle board’ similar to the surfing long boards. This requires a tremendous amount of core strength, balance and steadiness of mind. It has been around for only a few years, but is catching on quickly with celebrities like Jennifer Aniston and Cameron Diaz enthusastically giving it a try out in Hollywood and on vacations in warm oceans;)

I created paddleboard yoga, to add variety and a new challenge to my yoga practice. It requires more core strength and balance then practicing on a flat surface or studio floor. The main benefits include:

1) Improved balance

2) Core conditioning

3) Mental focus

4) Connecting with Nature

5) Diversifying your routine

6) Trying new things

7) Overcoming fears, etc

This year, while we’re in Yucatan Peninsula and Isla Mujeres, Mexico (January 24-31, 2010- where I’m leading a yoga retreat) we will practicing more Paddle Board Yoga amongst other fun activities like swimming with dolphins, boating, vinyasa yoga practices, hiking, zip lining, eating organic healthy foods, meditating, rejuvenating our bodies and souls and visiting Chichen Itza Mayan Pyramids. **There is still a few rooms available for you to join us, and there’s even a last minute registration discount for all who register in the next week**
