About elephant journal

elephant journal is dedicated to "bringing together those working (and playing) to create enlightened society." We're about anything that helps us to live a good life that's also good for others, and our planet. >>> Founded as a print magazine in 2002, we went national in 2005 and then (because mainstream magazine distribution is wildly inefficient from an eco-responsible point of view) transitioned online in 2009. >>> elephant's been named to 30 top new media lists, and was voted #1 in the US on twitter's Shorty Awards for #green content...two years running. >>> Get involved: > Subscribe to our free Best of the Week e-newsletter. > Follow us on Twitter Fan us on Facebook. > Write: send article or query. > Advertise. > Pay for what you read, help indie journalism survive and thrive.

  1. Would you believe me if I told you I was in the San Francisco area during the height of Haight-Ashbury and San Francisco rock? To me this was all just local news, 1967-71.

However, I wasn't part of the "hippie" movement, although I did have the long haired look for awhile. I was a literature student at Stanford and spent most of my time playing flamenco guitar, then headed for Spain right after graduating. Music was infinitely more important to me that politics, social trends, college or anything else (see http://padreehijo.bandcamp.com/ )

I hate to say this, but Harry Reasoner was absolutely right in his ending comment about the hippie movement in your last video, "It is by definition a quality of childhood. People who can grow beards and make love are supposed to move from innocence to wisdom."

    I know. I was there.

Hi! Someone in my Facebook group shared this website with us so I came to look it over. I’m definitely loving the information. I’m book-marking and will be tweeting this to my followers! Terrific blog and great design and style.

So very true… the hippies were right on many issues.

Perhaps we forget how much of what they practiced and fought for has become mainstream.
