“More than 80,000 chemicals are available in the United States. 200 have been tested for safety. Only five have been regulated by the EPA”.

The fact that it takes constant and significant effort to avoid slews of unregulated chemicals in our day to day lives is preposterous, to say the least. We must wonder which chemicals line our coffee cups, which shampoos are hormonally disrupting us with phthalates, and whether our water filters are effectively removing the cocktail of chemicals in our tap water. Is there anything being done to move forward in updating and enforcing stricter chemical regulations?

It is easy to become overwhelmed by the behemoth industries that have vesting financial interests in continuing to churn out these chemicals into our lives. However, we cannot accept the damage that is being done to both the health of our bodies and the health of our planet.

But what can we do?

The first step is awareness. If we turn a blind eye to our chemical drenched surroundings, the problem will only worsen.

The Human Experiment, a documentary from Emmy winning directors Dana Nachman and Don Hardy Jr. and narrated by actor Sean Penn, is shining some much needed light on the chemical industries that are profiting off of polluting our lives. It will be screening at this Fall’s film festivals. Wider release is expected for early next year.
