“We’re standing on dry grass. We should be standing on five feet of snow.”
~ Gov. Jerry Brown
There is no “they are having a drought in California.”
There is no “there’s a drought over there.”
There is no “those people are running out of water.”
There is no any of that
Je suis California.
This is a tsunami by another name
A Sandy by another name and
A Katrina by another name
This is a bigger name than all of those names put together.
This is drought.
Je suis California.
There is no need to argue about why it happened
Fracking
or freeways
or too many cars
or too many people
or poor management
or overuse
or eating too much beef
or agriculture
or it’s his fault or it’s her fault or it’s that guy’s fault.
No none of that helps.
California is on her knees
She needs us
Je suis California
When I was sick
and broken
and couldn’t eat certain foods
my husband said
I won’t eat certain foods either
In solidarity
When a friend’s sister
lost her hair to chemotherapy
my friend said
I won’t have hair either
and shaved her head
In solidarity
California is on her knees
She is broken
She needs all the mates and sisters she can find
She needs me
I won’t have 25% as much water either
In solidarity
Je suis California.
