The Must-Know Information to Study in Canada in 2019.

Home to some of the top-ranking universities in the world, Canada is among the study destinations in the world. 26 Canadian universities are ranked in the QS World University Rankings 2019. Three Universities including the University of Toronto, McGill University, and the University of British Columbia ranks 28,33 and 47 respectively in the world. With many top tier universities, student friendly cities, research-based programme, numerous study programmes, international students are continually choosing to study in Canada for higher education.

The first step towards studying in Canada is shortlisting the course and the university the student chooses to study in. To qualify for higher education in Canada, International students must meet various entry requirement set down by the respective institution as well as the Government of Canada. There are not exactly Canada entrance exam, however there are some general requirements to study in Canada that we can look at:

Application process to study in Canada

To apply to a Canadian University, you can either apply through a Registered Education Agent or apply to the university directly. Generally, please ask the students to submit the following documents along with your application form:

  1. Completion of secondary school/ an undergraduate degree from an accredited/recognized institution/ university
  2. Good merits
  3. Strong reference letters
  4. Written Statements
  5. Test scores of IELTS, GRE, GMAT etc

Criteria for admission in Canada

The criteria for admission to study in Canada differ from the level of education where the requirements for test scores such as IELTS exam, TOEFL exam. GMAT etc are set accordingly. This is how the criteria for admission looks for various levels of higher education:

  1. For Bachelor’s/Diploma/Certificate courses
  2. Flexible admission
  3. IELTS score: 6 / 6.5 overall – As per the course and institution requirement
  4. TOEFL: PBT: 550 min. CBT: 213 min.
  5. For Post Graduate courses
  6. 2-3 years full time work experience
  7. GMAT score of 580-600 min.
  8. IELTS score of 6.5 overall with no bands less than 6
  9. TOEFL: PBT: 580-600 min.
  10. CBT: 237-250 min.
  11. 4 yr. Bachelor’s degree and an average 70%
  12. Some institutions may require written samples/copies of published work/Portfolio
  13. For Undergraduate courses
  14. 70% in 12th grade
  15. TOEFL: PBT: 580-600 min.
  16. CBT: 237-250 min.
  17. 12th grade level Maths

Exams to study in Canada

Here are some listed common entrance exams

  1. English Language Test
  2. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL: To measure applicants’ English reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.
  3. International English Language Testing System (IELTS): This is the most preferred test to evaluate the language ability of applicants who want to pursue higher education in Canada.
  4. Standard Aptitude Test
  5. Graduate Record Exam (GRE): for entering a graduate program or even master’s programme in Canada.
  6. SAT for admission in undergraduate courses.
  7. Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT): a prerequisite for admission to MBA or master’s programmes in Canada.
  8. Medical College Admission Test (MCAT): for admission into medical programs.
  9. Law School Admission Test (LSAT): for pursuing a degree in law.

Once students have completed their studies a Canadian institution, they can apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), which allows them to work in Canada where the duration will range from 8 months to 3 years. According to payscale, the average salary after PG Diploma is Canada is C$54K.
