How to Unwind From the Stresses of Life

I don’t know about you, but this time of year is always the most stressful for me. It feels like there are deadlines for everything closing in. During March especially, I find it so important to make sure that, with the stress of everything going on, I practice self-care. Just an hour (sometimes less) to put work and everything on the to-do list aside and relax for a moment helps keep me sane.

Yoga is by far one of my favorite ways to do so. I don’t always necessarily have the time to go to a studio, but simply following a youtube video is incredibly helpful in relieving stress. Doing a 30 minute Power Vinyasa Flow will leave you feeling amazing after, no matter what kind of day you have ahead of you or just got through. If you’re pressed for time, try doing a short 10-minute practice in the morning before work- it can transform your day.

Another great way to relieve stress through physical activity is going for a jog. I find running to be a great way to get rid of nerves and anxiety. Not to mention, you can make your run however long or short you need it to be based on your time and ability (and the amount of stress you’re trying to sweat out).

Exercise aside, sometimes just relaxing on the couch after a long day and watching an episode of your favorite show is enough to let you leave your world behind for a moment. If you’re anything like me and are always looking for suggestions for new shows, check out This is Us, The 100, Black Lightning, Orange is the New Black or Stranger Things. They topped the charts in 2018 for the most searched for popular TV shows, so they’re probably worth the watch.

Trying to avoid screens? Start a new book. Personally, I’ve always used Oprah’s Book Club to find new titles and she has never led me astray. While self-care is often thought of as a solo activity, joining an actual book club could be another great way to de-stress. Being around people socially (read: not for work) and having something to look forward to each week could be a great way to keep your mood boosted.

If you’re not a huge reader, but think that a weekly group activity could be your groove, get a group together to do weekly trivia night at a nearby café or bar. Having a scheduled social event to look forward to each week can be super rewarding and can brighten your whole week.

No matter what method (or, better yet, combination) you use to de-stress, it’s crucial to make sure that you are taking time out of each day for yourself. You’ll be all the happier for it.
