I’m Not Your Social Media Girlfriend

I’m not your relationship update. I’m not your new profile picture. I’m not your Woman Crush Wednesday. I’m not some abstract milestone to help develop your online persona. I won’t help you make your friends jealous or get your family to stop bugging you. I won’t help you generate hundreds of “likes.” I’m not just another notch in your online belt.

I’m here to help you disconnect. I’m here for the long face to face conversations in the middle of the night, about space, and Kafka and the nature of our existence. I’m here to bring a deeper sense of connection than chat bubbles on tiny silver screens. I’m here to share meals with, to hold hands with and to travel the world with. I’m here so you can feel something other than the shallow sense of validation that comes from receiving virtual hearts

So no, I won’t be your social media girlfriend. I won’t help you uphold the illusion that so many people fall victim to. I won’t be the smiling face in your profile picture while behind the scenes we settle into a passionless complacency as we scroll through our news feed on the couch. I won’t be reduced to a label that can be summarized in four or five options. I am here so your life can have more meaning than impressing people on the internet. I am your supporter, your lover, your best friend, and I deserve so much more than a line on a webpage.
