As we slowly begin to approach autumn and winter, you’ll probably already be feeling the itch to switch your home up slightly to reflect the change in seasons. After the year we’ve had and with restrictions showing no sign of easing up any time soon, the thought of spending more time in our homes, especially during autumn, isn’t a particularly pleasant one for many. However, now is the perfect time to make your home cosy and snug for the coming months and give your home a little refresh. 

 

When it comes to autumn home decor trends, there are the usual warm and earthy colours to contend with, as well as cosy textures and soothing scents, but this year there are also some surprising new trends. After months of being subjected to the same decor and rooms for days on end, this transition into autumn may be the thing that both you and your home needs. 

Textures and Layering

Affectionately known as jumper season, autumn is when many of us ditch the summer clothes and instead pull out our cosy knits, chunky boots and warm coats – and there’s no difference when it comes to our homes. During the summer, you’ll likely have changed the textures around your home without even really noticing – cooler bedding, getting rid of throws and leaving your blinds and curtains open for longer – and now is the perfect time to change these back again. 

 

Think chunky knitted throws, area rugs and soft pillows; these are great additions to the more relaxing rooms in your home, such as the living room and bedroom, and are a great way of making the room feel more comfortable and snug. Your choice of fabric is important too. Cotton is more suited for summer, where lighter materials are ideal, but in autumn you can be a little more daring. Velvet, corduroy and wool are all popular material choices for autumn and winter. 

 

Think Pink

Pink isn’t a usual colour choice for the autumn/winter months, but delicate and chalky pink shades are a hugely popular decorative choice at the moment, especially as we near the end of the year. Neutral Colours and Tones 

If you don’t fancy bold pops of colour around the home and prefer understated and elegant tones, then neutral colours are making a big comeback. White, beige and oat tones are particularly popular this autumn and can be used in almost every aspect of home decor, from flooring to light fittings. Rattan and wicker accessories work well with this colour palette, as do lighter wood furniture and rusty, metallic tones. Long gone are the days where this colourway would be classed as “boring”, it is now instead considered to be the height of style and sophistication. 

 

Lighting In Layers

Over recent years, the importance of lighting in and around the home has become more recognised. Many people don’t realise that lighting plays a huge part in the look and feel of your home, especially in the rooms where you want to evoke cosy and welcoming feelings. The living room is a perfect example of this, with many people often only having two lights – the main ceiling light and a table lamp. However, did you know that light shade and bulb choice can hugely affect the way the light is dispersed around the room? 

 

In autumn, especially, you will likely want the room to feel and look cosy, particularly on those darker evenings. Choosing a softer bulb will change the glow of the light around the room, whilst your choice of light shade will ensure that the light is either focused on one spot, or fills the room. Designer Furniture 

Designer furniture was once considered to be exclusively for those with larger decor budgets, however, it is something which has become more readily available for all homes, no matter the budget. The rise in designer furniture stores has led to this increase in demand for designer furniture, with everything from luxury sofas to stylish coffee tables on offer. 

 

As well as designer furniture, the trend of upcycling and vintage furniture has meant that people are able to find better quality furniture at lower price points and then redesign to suit their homes. Add A Touch Of Nature 

This year has seen the sale of house plants increase massively, with July in particularly seeing an 82% increase year on year sales. A trend encouraged by lockdown and isolation, it seems that house plants are more popular than ever, with many of us adding them to our homes in a way to bring the outdoors in. Plants create a soothing feel and actually help with the air quality and pollutants, so have health benefits too. 

 

Even if you’re not particularly green-fingered, there are plenty of house plants out there to suit all levels of gardening expertise and home decor. As we head into the autumn/winter months, where most of the greenery outdoors fades away, it’s a perfect time to add some house plants to your home if you haven’t already.
