A Powerful Maya Angelou Quote for when we Feel Powerless.

Each person has felt their bum hit rock bottom at some point.

And each rock bottom is different for every person. It might be the death of someone, the loss of a job, or realizing we cannot pay back a huge debt.

Either way, hitting that lowest point in life might feel like the end of the world, but it is not. Wanna know why? Because the only way is up from there. And that way up cannot be achieved unless we work for it.

It’s unrealistic to expect things to just magically happen without some work on our part.

Divine intervention is there in several of these moments. But we were also gifted the intelligence and power to use our blessings so we can dig our way from the underground and crawl back up to see the sun again.

Being who I am—someone who thrives on multitasking—whenever I had work at my old job that didn’t require analyses and my “super focusing” skills, I used to listen to podcasts while doing my tasks.

One of the podcasts I truly enjoyed was “Imagined Life” by Wondery. Each episode told the story of a famous person with the impact they left in the world—some you may like and others you may not. But most of those people, who somehow rose to fame or power, or both, especially the ones who made a positive change, went through hell and back to get to where they are at the moment.

I listened to the podcasts with such intensity that I was in awe whenever the episode ended, and sometimes, tearing up without realizing it. Why? Because at a particular moment in their lives, those people thought they had reached that rock bottom that we may be suffering from. And sometimes, their rock bottom can be much worse than ours.

But what did they do? They worked hard. They worked really hard to stand in the face of life and challenge it themselves, instead of the other way around.

And that’s when I remember someone really dear to my heart saying to me when they were passing through one of the most difficult times in their lives, “Life will not make me kneel. Each time it strikes me, I will rise back up even stronger.”

This led me to think about our dear Maya Angelou’s words.

Perhaps, it is time for us to start admitting the changes that we ought to go through so we can become stronger, to learn to love ourselves and admire our strength, to become resilient and able to take on anything that comes our way in life.

And through that process, we can begin to love the good and bad parts in our lives, the experiences that pulled us up and the ones that crashed us on the ground, the moments of absolute joy and the moments when we felt utterly powerless.

Because we are stronger than we think.

We only need to believe in ourselves so we can bring that strength to the surface.

And only then can we grow.
