This post is called creativity can be nurtured, how? I wanted to talk about how you can develop a better writing schedule specifically. How do you go from unsure and uneasy part time writer – who might occasionally take big breaks due to ‘writer block’ – to someone at ease with writing? The best part is that you can be a regular, more creative writer in no time.
- Continually Feed Creative Thoughts – A baby does not grow to be a toddler with care and nurture, the correct food and formula without a parents help. Thinking of your brain – even as an adult – as a baby can in fact help to reflect on what is and isn’t working in your creative mind. By giving attention and nurturing those creative thoughts and ideas, and most importantly writing them down and following them to find greater things, you inevitably end up more confident in your writing. Being indulged in reading a variety of books in many genres can keep your own spark of creative uniqueness alive. IF you find that reading is too much, why not taper off and read something just a little smaller, maybe some articles or blogs that are completely different to your usual go-to?
- Don’t Give Up – Never give up on your ideas or your current works in progress. Sometimes people can give us harsh criticism, but ultimately if you bin something you may later want to continue to write it. Do you get little to no feedback on poetry or prose, or short stories? Don’t go looking for feedback, just do your writing and stick to your passion. In time, people may appreciate it, or not. Don’t get hung up on waiting for everyone to suddenly start giving YOU the okay to carry on, that is your choice and yours only.
- Consistent Routines – I talked about this multiple times on my site. You need to get into a habit or routine of writing. You might prefer early mornings, watching the sunrise and the birds song, or you could be up at midnight, scrolling through a novel in progress. There is no hard and fast rule when to write, but you should definitely be choosing a time when you are at your most creative and productive. What do you feel relaxed doing? For me, writing is relaxing. But you might think drinking some tea on the balcony and typing a story is better. Entirely up to you what you use, but most of us have a positive experience we can incorporate into the process. If you yet have to write something daily, then there is nothing better to nurturing creativity. It gets you used to the process, and helps to keep your goals in site. Writing means writing, and a 2000 word daily word goal is not going to write itself if you are constantly distracted or procrastinating. Get on with it, everyday.
In summary you can cultivate and develop a healthy writing habit which in turn will have huge benefits to your routines and your works. I used the above and it has helped, among others. Remember to consistently feed those creative thoughts by exploring everything you know you can about your genre, or any other, or any form of art for that matter. Don’t give up, despite how hard it sounds to write 80,000 words in a book, you can do it, with patience and passion and good hardworking perseverance. Finally, most writers would agree, that a consistent writing routine is the backbone of many famous novelists, bloggers, journalists and more.
Stephen King once said that: “I like to get ten pages a day, which amounts to 2,000 words. That’s 180,000 words over a three-month span, a goodish length for a book.”
Take that last part with a pinch of salt, King is famous worldwide and anything he writes will be published, regardless of the length. Many publishers have their word limits, so be weary of this. Nonetheless his routine of 2,000 words a day is great to aim for. You know, I think I wrote about triple that today.
