Many times, people seek coaching or a therapist when they feel stuck, have something on their mind or need someone to talk to that is neutral. Typically, people turn to professional help especially when it comes to their sex life since sex is still taboo in America and may feel embarrassed while talking to their partner or friends. Who to seek professional help from, a sex coach or a sex therapist is a common question that I get a lot. I am here to ease your mind and explain the difference.

The main difference between a sex coach and a sex therapist is one is licensed and one is not. A sex therapist is a licensed mental health professional with an additional education in sexuality and sex topics. It can be as few as 8 hours or hundreds of hours. Typically, a sex therapist is recognized by the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapist (AASECT) however it is not required. A sex therapist typically explores a person’s past and goes into their childhood to help them heal their past wounds through coping skills and self-care. Sex therapy is fully clothed, strict no touching policy, and talk only therapy. Typically, a sex therapist who takes insurance will diagnose a person with a disorder from the DSM V which is required by insurance companies.

A sex coach, on the other hand, looks at what is going on in the present moment and moves the client(s) forward to their end goal. A person’s past experience will often be a part of the conversation for a brief period of time since important information can be there that is needed to move the client forward. A sex coach helps clients with their sexual concerns.  A certified sex coach has hundreds of hours of education in the sexuality field and can be seen as a generalist. Sex coaches typically specialize in one or two areas. Depending on what the sex coach specializes in will determine if they allow touching or nudity. You can find a list of certified sex coaches here.  Certified sex coaches are typically recognized by AASECT or the World Association of Sex Coaches (WASC).

In summary, sex therapist helps you understand how you got to where you are which can be very powerful and healing. Sex coaches help you move from where you are to where you want to be which also can be very powerful and healing. What it boils down to is where is your focus.

As a certified sex coach, my job is to help you with your sexual concerns and get you to your end goal.

Why don’t you have a man who is if we weren’t able to be friends and build trust then a physical relationship would be off the table. It would just be pointless mutual masturbation. Sexuality should be and is more of holy communion. It needs context, caring, and trust. Anything else just pales by comparison.

I want that do you have any experience with making that possible and your guidance if possible?
