I love sitting and having coffee at one of my local small town coffee establishments. The cozy little cafe is filled with the smells of brewing coffee, delicious donuts, pastries, bagels and not to mention all the yummy goodness of biscuits or sandwiches filled with eggs, cheese, meats and the best pimento cheese one could ask for.  All served with a side of two orange slices. Most of the locals run in before starting the hustle and bustle of their busy lives. The lucky few, like myself, are getting to take in all the sights and smells and do one of my favorite things, people watch.

The donut flavors change from day to day. Some of the them have crushed cereal, candy bars or cookies on them, glazed and others are plain. I  watch parents bring in their children to pick out their favorite donut while grabbing their coffee. The glass enclosure that encases these delightful items is smeared with small handprints, each of a child smiling, wide eyed, picking the perfect one. (I wonder if the workers get tired of cleaning it daily?)

This particular morning, I watch as one little blonde hair boy points with all his excitement, the chocolate donut with sprinkles  He can hardly contain himself! His mother barely has time to pay before he is meticulously picking each sprinkles off and eating them. As he is walking, he is smiling so brightly as if he was given a whole donut kingdom.

I start to wonder, at what age did we, as adults, lose our excitement for the simple things? When did the world stop being the glass enclosure for us, to pick what we wanted instead of what was just given to us? With so many choices in life, why not pick the sprinkles instead of the glazed or the plain!
I pray I never lose the innocence of a child. To be wide eyed with amazement everyday! I choose to laugh more, to be more forgiving of the smeared fingerprints of those who have looked into my own glass enclosure to my soul.  I choose to not take things so serious. We can not control life. It’s all about trusting and letting go. So today, what do you choose? What glass enclosure are you looking through, making your choice with excitement and awe?
Back to my coffee and my Butterfinger covered donut….
