I just watched a sentient being pass away.

I was just walking back to Elephant HQ from lunch at a restaurant called Leaf when a bomb went off, overhead. I jumped in the air. Everyone did. Everyone gathered.

Turned out a squirrel had somehow tripped a transformer, and fallen to the base of the telephone pole, singed and convulsing.

I thought he was gonna make it. Poor little guy.

Heartbreaking to watch.

After talking with those gathered and seeing him pass away, I returned with a shovel and buried him in my front yard. Redford, my half-hound, watched me do so, curiously.

Death is a vivid, naked thing. My ears are still ringing, dull. Thought it was nuclear war for a half second—apparently my last thought in this life, in such circumstances, will be of President Trump.

I saw the last breath go out of a deer on the road the other day. This world is indeed heartbreaking. As everyone stands around and watches. Nice of you to bury the little guy.
