I’m currently enrolled in a Mindful Self Compassion class and last week during session 4, we were giving the assignment of writing a letter to ourselves about a behavior we would like to change or get rid of.  Having several to choose from, I realized that my most negative behavior was the way my mind thought about me sometimes!!!  So, I composed this letter, written in loving kindness to my mind:

My Dearest Mind,

I’m writing you to express my gratitude and to inform you of a few changes I would like to make in our relationship. I would like to thank you for your years of service in working with me to bring about solutions to problems, figuring out good directions, supplying endless creativity and wonder and for the ability to think positively about future plans and putting the past into perspective.

As for the changes I would like to make, I am no longer willing to entertain thoughts that are negative or degrading in tone. I’m no longer interested in fearful thoughts of worry about things which I have no control. I’m also going to disengage from any thoughts that are self criticizing or demeaning. I realize that these are places that you tend to go when I’m not physically, spiritually or mentally well and I recognize that you think that you are only doing your job to supply my brain with thoughts and ideas without filter or discretion. So, I will now be responsible for that. Please do not be offended by these changes as I feel like in the long run, they will be beneficial to us both. As much as I love and respect your positive qualities, the negative ones are damaging and counter productive.

I realize that it may take some time to adjust and I appreciate your cooperation and patience. I’m learning that I am not you! I’m a beautiful child of God and He gave me you to use for my good and the good of others!

With Love, Respect and Gratitude, Tyler
