For my entire adult life, I have worked with kids as an educator, most recently in Montessori schools for the past 8 years. Starting this month, I am preparing to step into the unknown by closing the doors to this chapter of my life so that I can pursue my two greatest passions, yoga and playing music.
I have been a yoga teacher for the past 3 years and a singer/songwriter for the past 4 years, but they were always just extra “hobbies” in my life because my school job took up most of my time. This year, I finally realized that what truly makes me happy is playing music and practicing/teaching yoga asana.
In March, I finally released my first full length album after spending a little over a year recording the ten tracks at a studio in Fairfax, California with an amazing producer, Christopher Krotky. As I prepare to open some new doors with my music and my yoga teaching, I am completely terrified. It is a huge financial risk, but I feel strongly that I need to take this step, and now is the time.
One morning in February, I woke up with a vision for a music video for one of the songs on the album that represents the merging of these two worlds. Although in some ways they are separate (I play under the name Lyra Star for my music), they are also both a big part of who I am. I approached director Jared Swanson, whom I had worked with before, and I told him what I envisioned for the song, “Paper Moon.” We spent an evening filming at Frequency Yoga, the studio where I teach. After getting my makeup done, I put on a white leotard and did my asana practice with my own song playing in the background while Jared filmed.
It was a powerful experience to be surrounded by my music as I flowed through some of my favorite asanas and transitions. The resulting product is so beautiful, and I am proud to release it into the world as I start to really put myself out there for all to see… this is me sharing myself, my music, and my yoga practice.
