Oh, Little One in front of me,
I watch the fight you fight.
With the beeping of machines
You sleep soundly through the night.
I sit back and I watch you
And the beating of my heart
Wants nothing more than to take it on
Switch that name up on that chart.
The doctors they keep coming in
I try and read what’s on their face
To see if news they give me
Is delivered with pain or grace
They know that it’s my child
They feel my anxiety and fear
They want to keep me hopeful
And fill my soul with cheer.
Many times this is the case
Sometimes the news is rough
But this little one I’m watching
Is so much more than tough
This little one so fragile
Has courage and won’t quit
Oh, Little One, you have no fear
You amaze me with your spirit.
You smile when you’re hurting
Just so I don’t cry
You accept the challenge of your life
You are a wonder in my eye.
Oh, Little One, sleep well tonight
Let your body just get stronger
As we wait so patiently
And pray your wait won’t last much longer
I can’t wait to see you run again
To dance and play and sing
Didn’t think it was a challenge
That this universe would bring.
There’s no explanation
God, why can’t it be me?
My faith is being tested
More than I ever thought it’d be.
I will never give up hope
I’ll sacrifice it all
Just to see you home again
So we can go play ball.
As hard as it has been for me
To see you like you are
I’m honored to be by your side
You’re shining brighter than a star
Oh, Little One, your epic bravery
No one will forget
So the battle that you’re fighting
Is one I will accept.
