Have you ever set out to accomplish something that only you could envision? I’m almost certain that this has been the majority of us at one time or another. What I’ve come to appreciate with my own undertakings is the value of time – quiet time in particular. On numerous occasions, I’ve gone weeks without a single distraction from anyone or anything. But throughout so many of those priceless occurences, I had no central purpose to focus my energies on.
And now that I finally have a vision for my future, all of those fleeting moments of stillness aren’t as easy to come by. For example, I currently live abroad which isn’t a real difficulty. But in order to afford rent, I’m obliged to share a living space with eight other individuals – making silence itself somewhat of a high value commodity.
But when you want something you’ll find a way. When you don’t want something you you’ll find an excuse.
Traveling the world has always been a dream of mine. And as a result of finally putting all of my excuses aside, I’m now realizing that dream. Consequently, a theme that continually reoccurs during my travels is the maturation of old perceptions. At one time, I used to feel disempowered and sorry for myself for never setting aside the time or resources for trekking the globe. But now experience has opened my eyes to the number of people bogged down with often inescapable responsibilities.
The difference between our lives boils down to the choices we make. After all, I could be upset for filling so many of my days with fruitless activities. However, I’m grateful for being able forgive myself for not knowing any better. And as Maya Angelou puts it, “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”
When it comes to improving upon my circumstances, I’ve found that strategic planning coupled with a narrowed focus has yielded far better choices in life than undisciplined, daily routines ever could.
Another key ingredient that’s helping me achieve a personal sense of success is setting bigger and bolder goals for myself. Like millions of other entrepreneurs, I’ve been utilizing every form of social media available to compete for the acquisition of followers. After all, having a large numbers of followers is today’s counterpart to owning valuable real estate.
Do I perceive my followers as property? Absolutely not. But I do see the benefits of generating content that is relevant, informative, entertaining, and valuable for the masses. But as much as I enjoy creating beauty through art, Life also demands that I also earn a living. So, I’m not only an entrepreneur, I’m also a hustler. And by our very nature, hustler’s are adept at finding opportunities where others only see misfortune.
As such, it has become my primary ambition to be a part of a growing revolution. Only this revolution doesn’t consist in breaking down the systems that are currently in place. Instead, I’m inspired to bring forth, through art, a whole new set of ideals that make the old ways seem obsolete. But doing so requires the support of my on-line community.
And in a world filled with falsehoods, it’s always refreshing whenever anyone speaks the plain, honest, and not always pretty truth.
Is my life perfect? Not at all. I’ve fallen on my face countless times as a result of being tripped up by many of my own shortcomings. For years, these self-imposed entanglements have steered me away from maintaining any sense of direction in life. But these temporary distractions also served as a means of motivation. After all, it isn’t what life throws up between you and your dreams but how you’re able to respond in order to achieve any desired goal.
Ultimately, I would urge everyone to take time out and relish in those silent spaces that exist in between the clamor of daily existence. Who knows, the solution to realizing your own dreams might just be the sweetest sound you never heard.
Love & Aloha,
Alexander Demetrius
