The Vessel For Her Soul
“Who am I?
What am I here to do?”
The questions haunt her
every hour, every minute,
every moment.
“What is this life for?
What talent
do I bring
to this experience of living?”
The questions
taunt her
in every glimmer of light,
every breeze,
every breath.
“Show yourself to me.” She prays.
“Please, show me
the love within me.
Bring forth the passion, the curiosity,
the wonder.
Show me what I am capable of.
Show me the truth within
that is screaming to come out.”
There was a time she felt herself as a vessel.
She could feel the life,
the spark of God
growing within her.
Then, she knew her purpose—
to bring forth that light,
see it come into being.
Her body felt useful
feeding and
nurturing the growing entity
that would burst forth
when it was ready.
And it did.
After nine months, she could embrace
the love she held in her heart.
It was living and breathing,
expecting to be cherished
as the treasure it had always been.
But now, the creation is incubating
and it’s form
yet to be determined.
Because this time,
the love
is an expression of her own soul
not the manifestation of another.
This time her job
is to be the vessel
of her truth.
Notes from the Author
As a woman and a mother, I often feel as though my purpose in life is two-fold:
to hold things together
to provide whatever’s needed to those around me
I love these jobs. They make me feel essential. But sometimes, I also feel empty and used—as if I (and those I care for) have forgotten that there is a “me” inside that has needs and desires or feels overwhelmed and uncontained.
Like a womb, a vessel is a container. It holds space. It is also a ship that carries precious cargo from one place to another.
I wrote this poem to honor that deep place within myself—and within so many extraordinary women who have given so much of themselves away—that so desperately craves sacred space, nurturing, and the opportunity to shine.
