It gets harder and harder to send the boys to school each day. It’s gone from “will that happen to MY child?” To “WHEN will that be my child?”

So much fear. Shootings…school shootings, are an epidemic. We have created a society where it is a solution to a problem, to pick up a gun and shoot people.

It is not something easily solved as it has taken us years to get here. All the debating in the world hasn’t undone it.

There are layers to this epidemic and only by addressing all of them, will we truly make things better. Safe. Healthy. Healed.

Otherwise, we will just make something else worse.

There is no ONE thing that has caused this epidemic. It may be the case in other countries, but we are not other countries. Americans think and act differently. Our lives are so much different.

This country does not function the same and neither does its people. Comparing ourselves to other countries who have solved their similar issues with one solution and thinking we can do the same, is naive.

We must look at every aspect and realize that we are not the same as those countries. The solution will not be the same. We may pull some of the solutions from these amazing countries that are getting it right and protecting their citizens, but we might have to model ourselves after 4 or 5 of them to correct the imbalance in our country.

It’s not just about guns. It’s not just about mental health. It’s not just about safety or rights. It’s ALSO about how we in America value life. Each other. Our family values. Our presence with our kids. What we are teaching them. What they see on tv. What we have allowed as acceptable. Our violent society.

WE have created a society in AMERICA where human lives mean little. Possessions mean much. Judgement abounds. We claim on signs that lives matter, but we do not act like they do. When we are next to another’s human being… we do not treat them like they do.

It’s not ONE thing. And we deserve better. Our children deserve better.

YOUR life matters to me. I’m going to keep passionately shifting the way we view humankind until shootings are no longer something we need to fear.

With love.
