would you recognise
true love
if it found you
if after years of
having an idea of love
so deeply impressed upon your mind
would you recognise
true love
if it came for you
if it gently whispered
your name
would you hear it’s call
would you choose to listen
at first you might not recognise a love like that
for true love
doesn’t make demands
no — it only waits
patiently
to be welcomed in
would you allow true love
to penetrate the layers of past pain
or would you turn from it
would you run out of fear
of the unfamiliar
swearing blindly
in all your stubbornness
that this is not love
this cannot be love
for it feels too safe
too real
it is only a fool who chooses
heartbreak
and calls it love
then complains that love
is too painful
there lies our mistake
for true love is a choice
to accept another
exactly as they are
true love is being given
the freedom to leave
the space to breathe
true love is a choice
made on each day
at each moment
true love makes
no requests
only unconditionally accepts
true love has no expectations
it promises no happiness
offers no future
to be loved like this is no easy feat
a love like this
bares all
is real
is raw
this love is not blind
for it acknowledges every part of a person
and says yes to them all
true love
perhaps i am just not ready for a love like that
