International Day of Peace (Peace Day).

I didn’t realize until I went to yoga this morning and the teacher introduced the class’s theme that today is our International Day of Peace. “Peace Day” has been celebrated since 1982, but it wasn’t until 2002 that the U.N. officially declared the 21st of September as the holiday’s permanent date. I’m marking my calendar for 2009, so I’m not caught off guard to attend (or plan!) something for next year.

Events have been happening worldwide today, and it’s not too late to check it all out via webcasts.  Peace Day also coincides with a global 24-hour ceasefire and you can email your elected officials to support this cause.
You can also text (or email via the organization’s website) your thoughts on making peace a reality, to be read at the annual opening of the General Assembly on September 23rd.
