NSFW! Is Tantra about Sex? XXX? In the West, it is.

It’s even eco, more or less.

Click here to enjoy a few tasteful softcore how-to videos and photos…then go meditate and see what kinda thoughts pop up. Label them as “just thoughts,” and return your attention to the breath, again and again. Now that’s Tantra!

I grew up in an American Buddhist family, as some of my readers will be all too well aware. In Buddhism, Tantra (or Vajrayana) is not about sex. In fact, I studied it as a child (and not at night with a flashlight and a blanket over my head).

There are teachings within Tantra that have something to do with the art and practice of spiritually-directed, transcendent sex—but even those, a very small part (say .00005% of Tantra) are intended to help the Bodhisattva (a Buddhist dedicated to helping others) clarify his or her mind and heart and so better be able to help others.

Bet you didn’t notice the Buddha, top left. Neither do practitioners of ‘modern tantra.’

Of course, in the West, Tantra equates with sex 99.00095% of the time—as in this titillating slash insightful post on buddy* Rod Meade Sperry’s The Worst Horse, a leading American Buddhist culture and practice web site devoted to spearing spiritual materialism and yet cataloging Buddhism’s effect on our culture, and vice versa.. That’s all fine and good—if it weren’t just a slightly “Asian” flavor of softcore how-to porn for bored yuppies in couples therapy.

elephantjournaldotcom hearts The Worst Horse. I recommend all American Buddhists subscribe to it.

*Rod and I first (virtually) met through Jim Gimian, publisher of The Shambhala Sun.

  1. hi friends,
in germany this has been going on for ages and it’s still a big thing in what’s left of spiritual or esoteric magazines. first there was a big scene in the wake of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh where “tantra” was mainly sex work, and now it has gone mainstream. So never say “tantra” when you mean vajrayana buddhism….

This is true, and here's not so much clarity around Tantric sexual practices, or RED Tantra as they supposedly call it, as most of those ancient books got burnt by the Muslims way back then. Supposedly after many years of practice meditation and other techniques in the temples, and the teacher thought the student was ready, then they received the teaching of the SACRED sexual practices. Though I personally have seen/experienced a tremendous value, much healing around sex and between partners with sexual Tantric practices. And not all Tantric teachings out there are "true", but most I believe is. What rings true to YOUR heart.

Free? If you actually want to read ele, it’s a nominal $12 a year. But cheap and worth it to me in times when a lousy journal article is ~$20.

Information will only be truly free again when we go back to distributing pamphlets on the streets. It is free now you say? No, it’s not, and getting less so. Cycles though, it’s all cycles.

Amen to "That’s all fine and good—if it weren’t just a slightly “Asian” flavor of soltcore how-to porn for bored yuppies in couples therapy." LOL This is just porn and people out to make money, it has nothing to do with spirituality.

  13. Dr.Raj says:

Tantra aims at expanding the experience of everyday life, of enjoying and living life to the full, as a means to higher awareness. It encompasses all aspect of life, whether in the material world or that which is transcendent.

I have not yet watched the associated video, but I can tell you that any sturdy armless chair will work for this, and it is a great position for the woman to hit the g-spot. I discovered this by accident on a balcony in Matzatlan on the patio chair, and promptly bought one for my boyfriend’s house (an indoor version, just needs to have a strong back and no arms.) Also, some car seats work well for this position. The benefit over traditional woman-on-top is that the man is sitting up and locked into the position and she then can manipulate her own movements without him shifting away. Nice :) Alexa M.

  17. Woah! I’m really loving the template/theme of this blog. It’s simple,
yet effective. A lot of times it’s hard to get that “perfect balance” between usability and appearance. I must say you’ve done a very good job with this.
Additionally, the blog loads super fast for me on Internet explorer.
    Outstanding Blog!
