Proposition 8, The Musical. Starring Jack Black as Jesus (plus Margaret Cho, Maya Rudolph and other SNL alums).

This reminds me of the community productions of Godspell and Jesus Chris Superstar that I saw as a kid, complete with rainbow spandex, cheesy backdrop and a good old fashioned message of brotherly (and sisterly) love.

As the Episcopalian Church splits over an openly gay bishop and the Catholic Pope continues to travel around the world decrying gay marriage, I say, Please. Listen to Jack Black. The Bible offers some wonderful guidance and powerful stories, but it was written a long time ago. Like any book, it is a product of the culture, time and place that it grew out of. Just as stoning a woman for having sex out of marriage is no longer in style, denying equal rights to any group of people has no place in this 21st century democratic country. (Interestingly, our ed-in-chief Waylon made some of the same points in his letter on same-sex marriage last year.)

I saw “Daryl” from The Office. Then “Elliot” from Scrubs too! Thanks for sharing, Heather. I feel it’s useful to give coverage to some serious issues in a fun way such as this to get people talking and taking action.

  2. true and hilarious- made my morning- thanks Heather and SNL!

Aside from the annoying pop-up ads, that was the single best thing I’ve seen since…Jon Stewart nailed MSNBC to the Fox cross. Brilliant, funny, and important. Spread it!

haha… that’s awesome! what a great cast too. thanks Heather. yea, right on about the Bible as a historical text. i mean many of the things in it are for the health and security of that society in which it was written – the shellfish, the stoning of an adulterous woman for example. it is my understanding that same sex relationships, at least male-male, were in a sense like prostitution is today in that it was typical that it was where a husband would go to get his satisfaction. often time his male servant or slave was there for this so um, sanitation concerns you know. but, whatever the case was then, how all groups don’t have equal rights in our democratic nation today is disheatening and doesn’t make sense. Prop 8 and rhetoric like it twist the issue around so much – i’ve found some insight on such incidents from the political theorist George Lakoff. Prop 8 is a perfect example of what he calls framing the debate, a strategy used by the right wing. though his work isn’t quite as hillarious, it’s brillant the same. check him out!
