elephantjournal.com review: Spiritual Liberation with Michael Bernard Beckwith.

Now, normally anything subtitled “Fulfilling Your Soul’s Potential” provokes flashing red lights from my desktop Spiritual Materialism-ometer. But this new film, starring that Michael Beckwith of The Secret—last year’s New Age blockbuster—well, my new LA friend Claire, who I met when out for Eco Gift, she went and saw it on elephantjournal.com’s behalf.

And Claire got a lot out of it—as she details below—so in the spirit of open-mindedness and embracing life to its fullest, read on—and if so inspired, check out the movie! I’ve included a few videos at bottom. ~ elephantjournal.com ed-in-chief, Waylon Lewis.

Film Review:  Spiritual Liberation: Fulfilling Your Soul’s Potential.

Spiritual Liberation is a film inspired by the bestselling book by the same name. It follows a Sunday in the life of Michael Bernard Beckwith, speaking at Agape International Spiritual Center and doing everyday mundane things such as walking his dogs and grocery shopping. The message throughout is clear: when we are fully present, as an active participant in our lives, the mundane can become the divine.

Spiritual Liberation is about each person uncovering the greatness within their being, on a very real level.   Everyone has a unique voice and gift that wants to come forth. The teachings of Dr. Beckwith are real and accessible, involving real people and ordinary, everyday circumstances. It features interviews with other spiritual teachers and highlights the music of Ricki Byars Beckwith, Tim McAfee-Lewis and the Agape International Choir.

It reminds me of my favorite book, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, in which an Andalusian shepherd boy discovers a path towards divinity while seeking a treasure.  Both stories involve letting go of a life that was once comfortable and secure in search of something greater. When Dr. Beckwith was able to fully say “yes” to the universe, his life changed dramatically. He stopped running away from that which was trying to catch him and started running toward his “soul’s potential.” The result is a richer life—one overflowing with joy, awareness, and love (and having experienced the energy found at Agape International Spiritual Center firsthand, I can say that it is truly something to behold!).

Produced by filmmaker  Mikki Willis of ELEVATE Films, in association with Agape Media International and Beyond Words Publishing, Spiritual Liberation is a light-hearted yet profound, take on the everyday existence of Dr. Beckwith. It’s amazing that this film was made in less than two months. The courage of the participants, the faith in their vision and trust in the journey exemplifies the overall message of Spiritual Liberation. It is, at once, meaningful and accessible in its approach.

Spiritual Liberation is available from the Agape Quiet Mind Bookstore. Check it out!
