[Review] Flatirons CrossFit: Ready to Get Your Butt Kicked?

I’ve been hearing about the CrossFit buzz for a while now and had to check it out. Little did I know that barfing might be a possibility due to the intensity of the workout. Each day the leader picks a new WOD (workout of the day) and a group of folks work together to do “sets” of the WOD under the clock and guidance of the workout leader.

Check this short 3 minute video of me getting my ass kicked doing the WOD and find out if I vomit:

According to Flatirons CrossFit website:

The first time I checked out Flatirons Crossfit, I scheduled an appt with Tim Retzik to get the details and tour. He walked me through proper technique with the kettlebells, the box jumps and “burpies.” Then he timed me doing 3 sets, starting with 21, 15, then 9. I thought I was just going to get “tour” and I got a six minute power workout instead.

Tim spent a lot of time helping me get the kettlebell thing and use proper technique so I wouldn’t get hurt. Most gyms never give you this kind of attention unless you are paying a private trainer. I was very impressed with the patience and support I got the first time I walked in. And, I was there to see a group finish their workout and watch how they cheered each other on.

I’m surprised there are only 2 main Crossfit gyms in Boulder–Boulder CrossFit & Flatirons CrossFit. We have so many “turbo” athletes here. Are they scared or just smart?

If you want to check it out, contact Tim Retzik RKC – Head trainer and Kettlebells.

I can testify that Crossfit is the single most ass kicking workout you will ever get. Two years ago I was I was training for a strong woman competition and could not believe how my body changed. The work outs are intense, explosive and drive you to want to be more committed to your body. Unfortunately, I moved to NY and gained a lot of weight and am slowly getting back into CF but as a woman, I never felt more confident as when I did CF.

  2. crossfit is good for general conditioning, but not for strength or sport-specific training – mostly, for me, it's a nice change of pace when I want a short, quick workout to keep my conditioning, but nothing more
