Think Different: Spiritual Materialism…or Inspiring Advertising?

think different

I’m with you on this one.

Is it wrong to “use” Gandhi or Allen Ginsberg or the Dalai Lama to sell Apple computers, or is this advertising as it should be—using a multi-kajillion dollar budget to simply, elegantly remind We the Masses of inspiring figures of our time?

  1. Using images of famous political leaders, religious figures, and artists in advertising reinforces the idea that the way to make a difference is to buy something. Buying an Apple computer thus signals to others how conscious and cool and political and spiritual you are, rather than actually doing something political, spiritual, creative, etc.

    Anyone see the film Seven Years in Tibet? It's my assumption the Dalai Lama is an avid fan of technology and would probably be very happy to endorse Apple, as am I! As a former PC user I am quite pleased with my MAC.

    Is it superficial of me to be more bothered by the bad grammar than the image of the Dalai Lama on an advertisement?
    Different is used as an adverb to describe Think: THINK DIFFERENTLY.
