Young Artists at Work
A Summer Art Experience
For ages 5-10

Get ready for an exciting summer! Young Artists at Work is an interdisciplinary art program featuring workshops designed to jump-start young peoples’ inherent creativity. Art exhibits in the museum’s galleries inspire students, while visiting artists provide hands-on instruction. Explore new techniques and incorporate unique art materials, generously donated by McGuckin Hardware. Each week-long workshop is taught by a specialized art educator-who also happens to be a professional artist – as well as a visiting artist with demonstrated flair in the chosen theme and 4-5 education interns. The classes are intentionally kept small in order to provide each student with plenty of individualized attention. Each week culminates in a student exhibit and reception at the museum. Full and half-day options are available.

Cost:
The cost for each workshop is $160 for non-members, and $140 for museum members. A family membership to the museum starts at $55 per year. For more information on membership, click here. During the weeks of June 22-26, July 13-17, and July 20-24, join us for two workshops, bring a lunch, and stay for the day! A weekly $20 supervision fee applies.

CONSERVATION & IMAGINATION with Jessica Bernstein (www.jessicamoonart.com)
June 15–19 from 9am–noon
Join the conservation movement and transform the materials most people toss out into art. Sculptor Jessica Bernstein will teach you how to use discarded water bottles, plastic grocery bags, old newspapers and other recyclables to create unique eco-friendly artwork!

PERFORMING PUPPETS with Emma Hardy (www.emmahardy.net)
June 22–26 from 9am–noon
Artist Emma Hardy will share her techniques for creating larger-than-life puppets and wearable art. Learn about dancing marionettes, create fun finger puppets, and make a magnificent mask of your own. Invite friends and family to see your group performance at the end of the week!

Do you love drawing, painting and sculpting animals? Go wild with artist Jessica Bernstein during this creature-inspired workshop. Learn about endangered animals and places that need our help, and use your natural, artistic talents to inspire other people to care about animals as much as you do!

Create extraordinary art from a basic and beloved material: YARN! Join tapestry artist Elaine Nixon and learn how to weave with a simple frame loom. Explore pattern, color, and texture, and turn your favorite drawing into a unique tapestry full of creativity!

Explore the world and discover indigenous cultures with painter Sarah Kinn. Journey to Australia and learn about Aboriginal painting. Visit Ghana and create colorful, symbolic Adinkra cloth. Use glitter and gems to decorate Buddhas from Thailand, India and China. Get ready for the trek of a lifetime!

Think you know what a book looks like? Look again! Mixed-media artist Angela Beloian will open your eyes to the art of bookmaking with techniques from around the world. Create an inspiring sketchbook, make a surprising pop-up book, and turn an old hardbound book into a work of art!

FOLK TALES AND FOUND OBJECTS with Bruce Campbell (www.brucecampbellart.com)
July 20–24 from 1–4pm
Have you ever painted a landscape on salvaged metal? What about a portrait on recycled wood? Using found objects as your canvas and folk tales as your inspiration, artist and sculptor Bruce Campbell will guide you in creating fantastic 3-dimensional creatures and imaginary worlds!

ART ECOSYSTEM with Ana Maria Hernando (www.anamariahernando.com)
August 3–7 from 9am–noon
Using fabric scraps and soft stuffing, BMoCA exhibiting artist
Ana Maria Hernando will lead you in creating dynamic wall sculptures based on the natural world. Tall trees, zany animals, and streaming water will grow and flow around us as we combine each student’s artwork to create a stunning, environmental installation!
