Organic ain’t Hippie.

It’s Old-Fashioned.

There’s nothing new about organic food. It ain’t hippie, or yuppy, or liberal. It’s what our grandparents ate. It’s what we all ate, for all time, up until after World War I, when the chemical war companies changed over their wares into fertilizers and we started agribusiness, industrial farming, penning our animals in and using sewage sludge and poisons and genetically-modified overly processed crap.

So remember, when you visit your grandma, as I did a few years back, and they say “I don’t know about all this organic stuff, it’s pricey, I think it’s a racket”…you can just say nah, this is what your parents and everyone before them ate. It’s the last 50 or so years that are the anomaly. Organic is, or ought to be, “conventional.” Conventional is what’s weird.

As seen today at the Ojai Farmers’ Market: organic isn’t anything new. It’s everything old-fashioned.

  1. Good point. Maybe we should be rethinking the way we talk about organic food, so it doesn't sound elitist.

  3. The only thing new about organic is the multi-billion dollar corporations influencing its legal definition so they can sprawl the word ORGANIC on all their packaging and still pay their employees minimum wage.

  4. Uh, well, and the necessity of regulating such companies who want to claim to be organic and get our hard-earned dollars. If it ain't organic, it's got antibiotic drugs, pesticides, it's GMO, and sewage sludge is often involved. Your choice!

    Don't like the huge organic companies? You can always grow it in your backyard, or in a community plot. Doesn't take much time, and it's healthy for body and mind to be out there digging around, getting a little exercise and fresh air!

  5. I've been saying this for years! The hippies didn't come up with organic, I should know I was one of them….When I think back to what my grandmother did, how she cooked, how the family lived, much of it was what a lot of people are now calling "sustainable living practises." It was logical, it was the only way the knew, it was practical….you composted, you cared for the soil, you sowed and then you reaped what you sowed. Simple. Then, when that was all done, it was cooked, preserved, canned, jarred, bottled, pickled, pressed, dehydrated by the sun, made into krauts and kimchi and kombucha….Study that world and learn…..

    I've often thought the same thing. We should be calling "organic" conventional and "conventional" something else. Perhaps the word "industrial" or "factory" produced food is more appropriate?

    My grandparents were farmers and grew vegetables and fruit for the market and never used pesticides, they couldn't afford to use them but also pesticides may not have been available at this period in time. There are many vegetables which are not susceptible to attack anyway, and others like tomato leaves and rhubarb leaves which have their own pest resistance and you can brew the leaves of these plants and use the water as a spray to protect other plants.
