Originally, we didn’t think we’d be having a baby in a few days,

we thought we’d be on our way to Tampa, FL to see U2 on their 360 tour.

(It would be like church to me)

And up until about a week ago, we thought that we still would…

but seriously?

I have to admit, in the past we have been those people;

you know the type,

the ones who think they can just fly here for a concert,

there for the fun weekend with friends…

here,

just trashing up the atmosphere with our carbon refuse…

It’s supposed to be 94 degrees in Houston today, and I still know a lot of people who don’t believe in global warming.

Some of them even believe that climate change environmentalists are worse than terrorists…

I mean, whoa!

But I think most people just don’t believe that we would ever really

let it go that far.

Like, there’s got to be a happy ending to this…

My mom flew to Houston from California to help me get ready for the baby,

momandabba2

but if the baby doesn’t come this week,

she’ll fly home for a week and then fly back after the baby comes.

I think a lot of people are like that…

our perspective of distance must have gotten messed up somewhere.

The problem is, we don’t have the technology that will keep us flying.

And we can’t stop what we’re doing long enough to think about it either.

Lately, I’ve noticed that people get really uncomfortable when I mention the idea of a global flood.

  1. Chuck says:

Yes, I would like your children to have a world to live in too. It's a serious problem.

  2. Leslie Deak says:

I love that Florida map in this entry!!

  3. ndsmith says:

It is uncomfortable and difficult to think of modern life without the convenience of cheap airtravel. For a lot of people, it's simply not an option.

But the cost to the environment is almost unthinkable. It's a weird place we've put ourselves in. Hmmph.

    • Grandma D says:

I'm among those who are thankful for modern life travel . . . to be with the grandchildren. It's a weird, good place. Hmmph, indeed.
      Love,
      Grandma D

  4. Eric says:

yes, too many people who think global warming is a "hoax", or that God or technology (or TechnoViking :) will keep us and our endless growth economic models flying…I know too many people with advanced degrees who can't/won't recycle…they don't understand my disgust and sense of urgency~
    it is rooted in LOVE.
for this planet, for all creatures, for you and your family…

I remember hearing Dr. Helen Caldicott ("If You Love This Planet") back in the mid-90's, and much of her warnings about the environment have become frightening realities. our brains, hopelessly multitasking, can't comprehend how quickly and broadly the world is changing…
    Thanks Joana!

  5. Grandma D says:

Your children will figure this out . . . because they have you as parents with Grandparents who will cheer them on.
I am thankful to be among them,
    Grandma D

  6. Eric says:

now when I fly, I buy carbon offset units (around $25 for an 8 hour flight) rather than flight insurance.

Yes, Grandma D–the children–we can't just expect them to gleefully take up the responsibility for the messes that we don't have answers for or have simply neglected. each successive generation has taken on new, more complex problems; BUT, I would say from the baby boomers on, the stakes have gone up astronomically (pun intended :)

Thanks again Joana for this wonderful blog!!!
    E.

  7. rachel says:

really, really simple important wakeup call.
    really, really hard.

  8. JoanaSmith says:

It's like somewhere, sometime the poison apple was bitten.
    Can we go back?
maybe the kiss of true love….
maybe we need to live in community with each other again.
    maybe we'll have to because…

    we need each other?

  9. William Deon says:

Hiya, I’m really glad I have found this info. Nowadays bloggers publish just about gossip and web stuff and this is really frustrating. A good site with interesting content, that’s what I need. Thank you for making this site, and I will be visiting again. Do you do newsletters? I Cant find it.
