The Karmapa, on lock down.

India bows to Communist Chinese pressure.

Thank to China’s interference and the Karmapa’s popularity, it appears, the Karmapa—widely rumored to be The Dalai Lama’s successor (though there is little ground for such speculation, which would run counter to tradition)—is not now allowed to travel outside of India.

The situation is a lot more complicated than the popularity of the Karmapa among Western devotees. That is not even close to being a deciding factor. Western media only tends to get the most superficial aspects of the story. It's all political and has little to do with religion. These links were tweeted by Robert Thurman today.

I have also written about these complications elsewhere http://wp.me/pc8tJ-wT

The options for the Karmapa are very limited. They consists of staying in India, as a stateless refugee, with some restrictions, or going back to China and likely being tortured. Does your country want to sponsor him and piss China off? I thought not.
