What if the ego wasn’t a jerk?

“I will gain more understanding when I realize there is an i in me that longs to become the I of Spirit.”

Iyanla Vanzant‘s July14th entry from Until Today! Daily Devotions for Spiritual Growth and Peace of Mind asks you to re-examine your ego-outlook.

“There seems to be a war against the ego. People are cautious about seeming ego-centered, ego-driven, and ego-based. As so many are moving toward a more spiritually grounded lifestyle, the ego is taking a pretty bad rap! Unfortunately, few people are talking about the power, the beauty, or the purpose of the ego.”

Poor ego, it’s just confused, seeing its reflection the dirty cracked mirror of original sin. It wants to be loved, but it doesn’t know how to open to it.

The ego is the little self that desires to become the Self fulfilled and fulfilled by the truth. It is the i of you that will motivate and support you in becoming the I of Spirit. When the i of you is tempered by the knowledge and love of I in you, the ego becomes a source of grace and compassion.”

Tell your ego…you hear its cries! Show it a clear reflection

“The ego serves as a map and compass. It is only when the ego is left to its own devices, when it is not spiritualized by the power of prayer, self-discipline and the influence of the Spirit within that it becomes a problem.

Until today you may not have understood the role the ego can play in your spiritual development. Just for today, examine your ego. Determine if your ego is a little i searching to fulfill itself or whether it longs to be a big I, destined to fill a grander purpose of Spirit.” –all italicized excerpts from Iyanla Vanzant, Until Today!
