Occupy The Farm. {Video}

After watching the trailer for Save the Farm and reading about the farmers who were evicted from the land that sustained hundreds of people, I was suspended in disbelief. Watch this trailer, read the info I picked up from the website, and let me know your own reaction. Then help by sharing this post.

SAVE THE FARM tells the story of the largest urban farm in the United States—14-acres sitting smack-dab in the middle of South Central Los Angeles. For 14 years, over 350 families cultivated this farm, feeding themselves and thousands in their community local organic food. When the city sells it to a developer in a closed-door meeting, activists and celebrities stage an 11th hour tree sit to save the farm. Director Michael Kuehnert demonstrates how a local community can come together to fight to save a farm they have come to depend on for their survival.

Some celeb reactions:

“It’s so much more powerful to grow your own food. This is something we have to honor, because once this is gone, people will not be able to feed themselves, and then what?” ~ Actress/Activist, ALICIA SILVERSTONE

“It’s a place of community, it’s a place of reconnecting with nature, and people need to see what’s going on and see how special and grounding and nourishing that this place can be.” ~ Actress, AMY SMART

“These people depend on this food, they live from this food.” ~ Actress, DARYL HANNAH

June 13, 2011 marked the five-year “anniversary” since the eviction of the farmers from the South Central Farm in downtown Los Angeles. The award-winning documentary short film, SAVE THE FARM directed by Michael Kuehnert, was released June 5, 2011 to commemorate the needless destruction of an important environmental and cultural oasis.

In an interview with hulu, Darryl Hannah was asked, “If you could have the audience take one thing to take away from “Save the Farm,” what would it be?”

If someone or some group has the means to go and get the resources together to buy the farm back for the farmers, I want them to hear the message. If not, the goal is to at least influence (Los Angeles City Councilwoman) Jan Perry and Mayor Villaraigosa to do all they can to make that happen. If people are inspired to start their own urban farms. ~Darryl Hannah

  1. Saddened, but unsurprised by this. Awful! I know there has also been legislation over the past few years under the guise of "food safety" that was intended to shut down small farming operations… I don't agree 100% with Hartke's stuff…but there is some good info here: http://hartkeisonline.com/food-politics/small-far
