Great Video, Actually. Redefining exploitative language, along with Capitalistic society.

Don’t worry, it’s not only respectful but truly beautiful, and inspiring to watch.

“We’re not going anywhere.”

Keep the Occupy Wall Street movement “hot” by making a donation and turning up the “heat” on corporatism.

I just made a donation for the NYC OWS here: http://www.nycga.net/how-to-help/

You can find other national OWS movements to donate to here: http://occupywallst.org/donate/

I gave what I could. So should you.

And yes, there’s a Hot Chicks of Occupy Wall Street tumblr to go with it.

More Context:

Greenstreet, writing on his own website, agreed that the “Hot Chicks” idea, at first, was “admittedly sophomoric.” But once at Zuccotti Park, he wrote, “it evolved into something more”:

“There was a vibrant energy in the air, a warmth of community and family, and the voices we heard were so hopeful and passionate. Pretty faces were making signs, giving speeches, organizing crowds, handing out food, singing, dancing, debating, hugging and marching.

“It made me want to pack my bags and pitch a tent on Wall Street. And it’s in the light that we created this video.

“And we hope it makes you want to be there too.”

Greenstreet also welcomed his critics. “I encourage you to use that as an excuse to create constructive discussions about the issues you have,” he wrote. “Because, to be honest, any excuse is a good excuse to bring up the topic of women’s rights.”

Greenstreet’s street cred as a card-carrying liberal…

…One of the women in the “Hot Chicks” video, an Egyptian-born woman named Dania, wrote to Greenstreet, thanking him “for capturing the feminine side of the story and [letting] you know that i do not care if you call me a hot chick. It’s actually humorous and i love it!”

Mila: Totally not what I expected! It's a wonderful little piece. I like the cinematography, the soundtrack – but most of all, the message!

  2. £$ says:

Like some Apple or Gap advert. Vacuous. Skin deep. I give up. Absurd. The body recoils with cringe.

  3. Bonnie says:

The fact is unavoidable that a woman's appearance is the criteria by which her eligibility for this video is assessed. This is superficial, not 'mindful'. I've been a reader of this site for over a year, and while there are some good things here, I feel quality is being sacrificed for quantity. This comes after being repeatedly bothered by sexualised images that accompany (and corrupt?) articles, chosen presumably to increase traffic—this point was employed as justification in an above comment—but I believe the means and ends must both be mindful for a site that aims at mindfulness. This will be my last visit to the site, I just thought I would contribute my perspective for your consideration upon leaving.

  4. Crystal says:

    I agree with Bonnie, whole-heartedly.

  5. alisha says:

I also agree with Bonnie. There are some great articles on El J but, increasingly more often, there are also articles that are not only sexist but misrepresent the supposedly spiritual focus of this website. This video is not respectful. It reduces women to their level of attractiveness and/or whiteness as an indicator of worth. Women, and further any human being, is infinitely more than "hot or not." I discovered this website because of an interest in expanding my yoga practice into something more meaningful. While there have definitely been articles which have helped open my eyes to the possibilities of devotion to yoga, mindfulness, and compassion, this website has mostly just made me more skeptical about those who deem themselves "spiritual."

Maybe we need to Occupy Elephant!

Lots of what I read in EJ is thought-provoking, original, informative, and wonderfully playful, but sometimes I wonder if Waylon is a psuedonym for Hugh Hefner. Tantric sex, I'm with you. Hot Chicks of OW, I'm out.

  7. Robert says:

Open your minds – the new hot refers to intelligence.

  8. Robert says:

and this video clearly demonstrates that. It will take time for the masses to catch on, but, as with all change, there is a period of getting used to the new paradigm. The more we change the meaning of the language, the more ridiculous and absurd the old perception will become.

Colleen Allen Kennedy This is annoying. I am ready to dump EJ. Every post has a picture of a "hot chick" as it is, and now this?!? I'm not even gonna watch the video.

Leanne DePaul These women are beautiful, divine, expressive individuals who are hot!! And they are using their 'fire' to burn up the illusions of our society. They aren't hot because of their looks but bc the call to return to the sacred feminine nature of love and compassion. And god bless the man who acknowledges these women's calls for transformation!!

elephantjournal.com Thank you Leanne, for taking the time to watch the video, read the post, and comment intelligently without reacting emotionally (just to the title). The women in this video are not all model types. They are all beautiful women, doing a beautiful job of spreading more beauty in the world. Please, I ask you all who commented above to first watch the video, and then accuse me / EJ of misogenysm (how the hell do you spell that?!), sexism, etc. That's really just not fair…

elephantjournal.com Charlotte (Waylon here) I thought the video did a good job of showing non-conventional beauty (ie what a magazine would not think of as attractive) as well as all ages, ethnicities).

  10. Robin Turner says:

The video is nice, though he could have lingered less lovingly on the body art. But the context is very frat-boy. In fact, it irritated me so much that I blogged about it TWICE: http://solri.livejournal.com/391424.html http://solri.livejournal.com/391760.html
If I may be so narcissistic as to quote myself: "Greenstreet is absolutely right that the presence of hot chicks will encourage men to turn up to events including, but by no means limited to, protest marches, yoga classes, ballroom dancing, therapy groups and poetry readings. I admit now—though never would have at the time—it was a factor for me in my youth (Latin American Solidarity had the hottest chicas, if you really want to know, followed by CND). On the other hand, guys who turn up just to ogle the women would do themselves and the world a service if they stayed at home and watched porn."

  11. Dawn says:

I must say after watching this video several times, I'm torn about it. I agree that the title is insulting and degrading (I don't care if you are trying to get views or trying to be ironic) The title still puts the women in the video in an objectified light. It just does. Yes, the women in the video are lovely, no they aren't all model types…but they are all conventionally pretty. Look at their features…all well balanced features even if some have pink hair, tattoos and piercings. All young and they all are small to medium in weight. (I'm talking about the women focused on as there is one older woman slightly out of focus in one shot and then a small girl in another) This is by no means a balanced representation of the women at OWS. I'm saying this as a woman who would be considered conventionally pretty herself. But I want to see a greater and more diverse representation. Perhaps they aren't going for that, but I think it would be a good idea. Is the video beautiful and moving…Yes, I think so. I especially love the words of the woman who says she doesn't want this all to be a burden on the backs of her children. But I think your reply to detractors of "Did you watch the video? Because I cannot fathom your response unless it's only to the title…" is unhelpful. If intelligence is the new hot…I'm all for it, but the title of Hot Chicks is ridiculous. And, I'm sorry but a bunch of guys telling me that we can only change the meaning of a word by shifting the paradigm of that word, sounds condescending. That really has to be an inside job where women refer to themselves as such, a man cannot tell me what I should be calling myself or my sisters…sorry if that sounds unfair and sexist, but that is the way it is. Men cannot claim that title for me, I must claim it for myself. Anyway, I do think it is a worthy issue to debate and I'm all for various voices and points of view because it makes life more interesting. Peace.

  12. Jessica Durivage Jessica says:

I haven't even had the chance to watch the video yet – and am pulled down to this comment thread of people, once again, thrashing ej for their choice of how to represent themselves to the public. I am sure – if you prefer – Waylon could use "fear based" tactics – like Fox News or other forms of media to get your attention. (is that on in the background while you are reading this?) They could also use Teddy Bears and rainbows.

Be thankful they are using something to get your attention and then, on top of that, giving you have a forum to dicuss while the spokesperson of ele (Waylon Lewis, himself) actually is present, answers back, defends, explains, offers opportunities to write, apologizes, etc. You are a part of creating this place called elephant journal, believe it or not. How would you choose to use this opportunity?

Wow. Just watched the video. So inspiring. Being the change in the world that you want to see is fucking hot.

thanks for posting a great video.

this video should be captioned hot chicks and morons fuck the ows movement and their communist agenda

  15. Suri kate says:

Well, im a chick and i cant see where the problem is … I think that all these girls in the video are average looking except for maybe one that actually looked kinda hot …i really dont understand why so many chicks are getting so ofended….they are clearly overreacting ….their perception must be really clouded in order to find this video degrading or offensive.

  16. phoebe says:

What if I occupy wall street but im not hot enough? does that mean my voice wont be heard? stupid ass video.

  17. ARCreated says:

I have to say I was resistant because of the title – but I do trust waylon so I watched and wow am I glad I did. I was ready to be bombarded by "stereotypical" big boobs blonde hair bikini hot…(not to detract from blond breasted women in bikinis of course!) but what I found was the broader perspective of HOT …this connection with the look in a woman's eye, the strength of her character and the fire in her spirit — each women decidedly beautiful for who she is — I felt camaraderie and joy that this was not a string of girls gone wild clips but a shift in the meaning of hot…
As a woman in her 40's I was moved by the inclusion of not just youthful beauty and not just model beauty but all beauty — I saw shift in this. Leave the title and let it draw people in — sometimes you have to meet people half way to create change, I'm OK tricking a few shallow people into seeing this and maybe changing some hearts and minds!
