“An amazing display of strength.”

Okay. After writing a few feminist questionings of this new popular middle-American “workout,” I’m a late convert to the notion that pole dancing can be an art. And particularly if you dance or do yoga, you may find this Jenyne Butterfly remarkable:

    Comment from elephant reader Alyssa:

what's empowering is not to mimic strippers but to do anything were you are being true to yourself.

Pole dancing takes an incredible amount of strength, flexibility, and self confidence, it can be a degrading activity for some, but it can be a beautiful and athletic dance to others. Humans are sexual beings, most dance is sexual on some level. I don't think there's anything wrong with celebrating that sexuality. Sex is what brought each one of us here to experience this beautiful life, and a tasteful display of sexiness can be a celebration of it's intrinsic place in life.

A woman walking down the street can degrade herself just by her attitude and personal beliefs, she doesn't have to be on a pole to do that. What gets expressed when one pole dances, as with any activity depends on the spirit behind the dancer.

A small percentage of the population has enough flexibility and strength to artfully do pole dancing!

See also, Felix Cane, who takes pole dancing to another level entirely.
