Revisiting one of our most popular posts last December (nearly 5,000 clicks!). It’s interesting to observe that Time Magazine’s Person of the Year this year is “The Protester.” Here’s an article that celebrates one of the first:
…A punk rock band should do a song based on Mary’s “Magnificat”
Knocked-up, teen-aged Mary was the first punk singer and the first rock & roller. When she learned that she would bear the Christ-child, she sang a song. It was a song of praise. And it was a song of protest and rebellion. She celebrates that God is about to do something new in the world.
She was celebrating that God was about to turn the world upside-down, knock the wealthy oppressors off their pedestals, lift up those who’ve been oppressed, and usher-in a new reign of social justice and reconciliation.
Here are the words to that song… (<— click to see the rest of the article)
** special bonus pieces (new for this year):
“The first Christmas carol was not some syrupy sweet incarnational tune. It was a revolutionary song about the mighty being thrown out of power, the poor being fed and the lowly being lifted up. Luke places this song on Mary’s lips just before Jesus is born. Who knows better what the real meaning of the birth of Jesus is than his mother?”
And here’s a poem that I wrote that perhaps captures some of the original radicality of Mary’s rebellious song, “adventus absurdus.”
“Mary” Rock’n Christmas everyone!
