Rick’s wife, Karen:

…Her husband’s success is “God’s will” …and he wants “to make the culture a better culture, more pleasing to God.”

Rudy Giuliani:

“It makes the party look like it isn’t a modern party,” Rudy Giuliani told CNN’s Erin Burnett, fretting about the candidates’ Cotton Mather attitude about women and gays. “It doesn’t understand the modern world that we live in.”

Jeb Bush. Yes, Bush:

“I used to be a conservative, and I watch these debates and I’m wondering, I don’t think I’ve changed, but it’s a little troubling sometimes when people are appealing to people’s fears and emotion rather than trying to get them to look over the horizon for a broader perspective.”

Santorum: “They have this idea that people should be left alone, be able to do whatever they want to do, government should keep our taxes down and regulations low, that we shouldn’t get involved in the bedroom or in cultural issues. That is not how traditional conservatives view the world.” (youtube.com)

And, finally: How Rick Santorum could take the whole Republican party down with him (washingtonpost.com)

I love his candidacy. I hope he gets the nomination—not only will President Obama trounce him, Santorum might just reinspire the Republican party to get back to its Lincoln/Ike non-interventionist more moderate roots.

Yes, that is all.

  1. The trouble is that, like it or not, we have a two party system. So, while, if Santorum got the Republican nod, there’d be an overwhelming likelihood that it’d result in a trouncing that would force the GOP to seriously rethink itself, there would also be a small chance that, due to a scandal or some unforseen circumstance, Obama’s reelection campain could implode. And, in a two-party system, hard as third parties might try to make a difference, if one of the two major parties candidate implodes, the other major party’s candidate wins, even if he’s a total joke like Santorum. So, ultimately, I don’t think that’s a risk we can take.

I hear you, it's a risk…but if you're betting on scandal, Obama's managed to run the most scandal-free administration, officially, for the longest time in something or other. I read that in Gawker, so it must be true!

And even if Santorum did somehow win over a beleagured Obama campaign, he'd invite such disdain (as evidenced by his quote of the day, every day that the media's light is now upon him) that Republicans would depart in droves and form a new, more moderate party akin to the party of the past, or President Santorum would lose 2016 so badly that the Dems would sweep everything. Two can play at this hypotheticals game.

What's more likely, the thought behind this blog, is that Santorum will finally do what no other extreme partisan GOP member has managed to do—inspire a more moderate and compassionate awakening in his own party. Read the Times article, linked on those quotes, above, to hear GOP members already talking like that.

That man is flippin' nuts. No two ways about it. He makes Newt seem appealing.
