George Clooney and his father, Nick, were arrested this morning for protesting outside the Sudanese embassy in Washington D.C. Any actor can walk the red carpet, be high maintenance, self-promote and court the press. Most of them don’t make these hard choices, most seem to put personal gain first. Hats off to George Clooney to using his celebrity to work towards change.
When interviewed Clooney replied,
“It’s actually a humiliating thing to be arrested no matter what you do, but I’m proud to be standing here with my father,” [speaking to NBC’s Andrea Mitchell] “When people ask you, ‘Where were you and where did you stand?’ I want to say I was standing on the right side of history.”
“Protest beyond the law is not a departure from democracy; it is absolutely essential to it.”
