One of the million-dollar questions of our time gets asked on screen by no other than brilliant and troublesome Morgan Spurlock—filmmaker who specializes in turning a crazy and improbable idea into a documentary, in which he is the main human experiment: Supersize Me, The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden? And now… this.
Seriously… what would you answer? What makes a man a man?
Easy!… until you open your mouth and you realize how relative it all is, and how the word “manly” may score even more meanings than the word “love”, especially in our day, age and western culture/s.
As pour moi, physically I have my preferences, like all people with eyes (Don’t wax your chest!—Unless…you have to?) but physical ideals—or ideas—are flexible and easy to stretch. Or are they?
On the inside—the real deal—to keep it short, I’d say: self-confidence (even if sometimes a fool), at least a little bit of heroism (even if imagined), self-determination (even if sometimes too forward), intellect/or some kind of brilliancy (even if hardly-earned or somewhat weird), a sense of humor (preferably wicked but any kind will do), courage (even when he’s shaking) and the-number-one-quality-in-a-man, wait for it…wait for it…waaait for it…
Kindness / Compassion / Empathy (even when it seems like he’s losing).
But all these qualities are genderless and they can also be applicable to women… So, I’m confused… Is it the voice then? The beard? The testosterone levels? The organ*? Or are all men, real men just because they’re men? Is manliness only a superficial aspect of Man or does it go deeper? (Thinking out loud here, don’t judge me.)

From America’s greatest beardsman, to Morgan Spurlock’s own mustache, Executive Producers Will Arnett, Jason Bateman and Ben Silverman bring us a hilarious look at men’s identity in the 21st century. Models, actors, experts and comedians weigh in on what it is to be a man in a world where the definition of masculinity has become as diverse as a hipster’s facial hair in Williamsburg. The hilarious follicles of men’s idiosyncratic grooming habits are thoroughly combed over as men finally take a long hard look in the mirror.
Mansome will hit select theaters on May 18th, 2012 in Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Dallas, Detroit, Hollywood, Houston, Irvine, CA, Pasadena, Minneapolis, New York, and Philadelphia.
So then, what makes a man a man?
