Daniel Suelo lives in a cave in Utah.
His story started in 2000 when he turned his back on mainstream living. He saw his current way of life as something that would never be balanced with wild nature. Since then, he has struck out on his own, testing whether or not it’s possible to live outside the system, free from money.
“For more than 11 years I’ve lived without money, government assistance, or conscious barter. I live primarily in a cave in a Utah canyon, when I’m not wandering. Occasionally I house-sit, though I never ask for house-sits; they just come to me. My food comes from what I find in dumpsters, wild edibles, and what people freely offer. My clothes are cast-offs.”
~ Daniel Suelo from Earth Island Journal
Daniel believes that money traps us in the illusion of the future. It causes us to live for rewards instead of in the present moment.
His story challenges us to ask:
What does complete freedom look like?
Is money an addiction that we just aren’t aware of?
Can we define ourselves without possessions and what would this look like?
