I Fell in Love the Other Day.

Via on Oct 12, 2012

There are moments that defy language.

There’s actually a word for things we don’t have words for, for things that are just untranslatable, but I don’t remember that either.

If there were a word for that second, that split second of light, warm wind, scent I can’t place and overwhelming love flooding my heart, I would tell you.

I turned around and took a picture, hoping to catch it, to capture it.

But it’s just a picture. It’s just like every other picture of nature that someone else took.

What you can’t see, is the second where I felt the blood rush to my face, felt my pulse quicken and felt my heart burst open and fall in love with life. I can’t show you.

I could try using words like “happiness” or “bliss” but they’ve been folded and unfolded so many times they are just worn out currency from a long forgotten country.

I could borrow someone else’s words, secondhand wisdom and try to make you feel it. Send you Rumi quotes and inspiring pictures, like turning on a flashlight to try and show you what it feels like to sit in the sun.

I could tell you, before you close one more door, turn around. Open your eyes.

I could whisper three magic words in your ear:

Take a deep breath all the way to your toes.

Bend back and stretch your arms so wide that your heart breaks open a little more.

Fall in love with life.

Kate Bartolotta is the strongest girl in the world. She is the love child of a pirate and a roller derby queen. She hails from the second star to the right. She doesn't know how to behave with all the apples and ibexes. She doesn't suffer from her eight million freckles, she loves them! Like a rolling stone, Kate gathers no moss. Kate loves kale, being barefoot, Dr. Seuss, singing too loudly, gallivanting, palindromes, blackberries and has far too many books for her own good. When she's not writing, you can find her practicing yoga, running in the woods, playing with her kids, devouring a book, planting dandelions, changing the world and doing her dishes. Kate does not play the accordion. She is a massage therapist, writer and a compassionate friend to all. This year Kate aspires to finally give up on learning to knit and will instead spend that time putting a little bit more of her heart on the page. Connect with Kate on Facebook and Twitter

  1. I loved this so much. I just said to a friend in an email yesterday, that I was feeling that sweet in love with life, a honeymoon in my Self, and yet, how do you translate that, really…..this is so good Kate! "like turning on a flashlight to try and show you what it feels like to sit in the sun."

Or how the word water does not convey what it feels like to be wet…..

  2. Chris Grosso says:

Yes! So raw and honest. Wonderful. And Jonsi… that one eyed handsome bastard!
