If Charles Dickens had sat down with Rodgers and Hammerstein, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Matt Stone and Trey Parker to write a holiday show, they just might have come up with A Broadway Christmas Carol.
But their efforts couldn’t have been any funnier than the hit musical created by Kathy Feininger, which will be performed in the University Theatre December 7th-23rd, in its regional premiere.
“It’s a traditional retelling of ‘A Christmas Carol’ using Broadway show tunes and rewritten lyrics,” says director Nathan Stith, a graduate student in the Ph.D. program. “Sometimes it leans toward the Dickensian and sometimes it leans toward the ridiculous Broadway world.”
Here’s just a hint of what audiences can expect: a doddering Ghost of Christmas Past warbling “Try to Remember” from The Fantasticks, Tiny Tim wearing an Annie fright wig—and even references to modern classics such as Avenue Q and The Book of Mormon.
Full of “infectiously, giddy moments” (Washington Post), A Broadway Christmas Carol will offer Colorado audiences a fresh, funny and charmingly recognizable retelling of the classic holiday ghost story.
“Scrooge will still go through his redemption,” says Stith, who worked as an actor in New York City for 15 years and appeared as Bobby the bartender in television’s One Life to Live. “And a rubber chicken will fall from the sky.”
Like all great parody and satire, A Broadway Christmas Carol is part spoof and part love note to that which it skewers. At the end of the performance, we leave the theatre uplifted by Dickens and laughing all the way home.
