Special Bonus – A Tip On Photographing Yoga:

Everyone has a camera these days – a phone will do the job. It’s not the camera. It’s you. And, I’d like to tell you something very important in creating powerful images of the poses. Get LOW. When I say low, I mean so low that you can taste the flavor of the Earth. The yogi you are working with has devoted their life to their practice. LOW makes them larger than life. Underneath everything so that you can clearly see the sky beneath their body. Otherwise the pose gets lost, and all their hard work has not been honored. Have fun and make great pictures!

A dedicated yoga practitioner himself, Sturman's work has increasingly focused on capturing the timeless grace and embodied mindfulness of asana. His portraits, whether set in the lively streets of Manhattan, the expansiveness of Malibu's beaches and canyons, the timeless elegance of Walden's New England, or the bleakness of San Quentin Prison, remind us that there is beauty everywhere. In Sturman's own words "I often think of Rumi: 'I can't stop pointing to the beauty.' That feels right to me." ...... You are certainly right about the camera! Many a pics I took with a very cheap camera….but many of these were moments in time. Not of yoga people but places, children, ordinary folk and flowers.

    Thanks for sharing!!
