“Pumped Up Kicks” censored off the radio.
Foster the People: “Between 2001-present over 270,000 people have been killed in the US from a gun. It’s time to reform the laws.”
The way to a safer society isn’t censorship of awareness. It’s reducing easy access to what, in the hands of those who would do harm, can do harm—and it’s increasing the access to what might help them.
Here’s the song, in case you’ve managed to forget it:
“…the station has completely pulled the song from their playlists after the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut last week.
Lyrics to the song include: “All the other kids with the pumped up kicks / You better run, better run, outrun my gun/ All the other kids with the pumped up kicks / You better run, better run, faster than my bullet.”
The group have previously spoken about the meaning behind the track, which was to help raise awareness about gun violence in schools.
The trio have been supporting those affected by the tragedy on their Twitter page, urging people to donate to charities and speaking out for a change in US gun laws.
