One has to wonder how Tolkien 'knew things' that his contemporaries did not…..
He wrote the Hobbit as the World raced toward WWII and after his own experiences in WWI times. Then Lord of the Rings was written from 1937 right on through WWII to 1949. What remains sad is that evil is still so alive and well.
